OH i know! it was out a cruise ship window and i was leaning over some one and took the shot very quickly. The sun goes down so fast i just wanted to get a quick snap shot. I wish i had got it more level lol :(

You can fix the rotation in Photoshop, BTW.
Use the Measure tool (click and hold the Eyedropper button to access it) to draw a line on the horizon, then go to Image - Rotate Canvas - Arbitrary, and it'll have the amount of rotation needed to make that line level pre-entered.

Or you can pull a ruler from the top down and use it as a guide for your horizon ctrl t will allow you to rotate distort and whatnot assuming you have unlocked the layer by double clicking it and renaming.

School's killing the amount of time that I have been able to get out and shoot. Mostly to the point where my camera is collecting dust. But heres a couple.

Not too bad all in all, shooting at iso400, with the 18-200VR. Shots turned out pretty good with the typical poor lighting in a gym.

Yes, the Iron Chink was meant as a racial slur. Its a machine thats designed to cut the heads and tails and gut fish at a speed of 50 fish per minute. It was designed and implemented at the early part of the century to replace the Chinese workers in the fish cutting plants.

Hey, that's my family castle! Isn't it one of the most beautiful castles out there? Haha I might be biased, but it IS the most photographed castle in Scotland lol!

That's a really nice picture, the clouds and lack of sun makes it look very dramatic! I was just in Scotland for the past 2 weeks for my honeymoon, but not in that area. I visited that area 2 years ago with my mom though, this was the picture I got from there, I took it from the other side though. Haha it isn't from this may but it is from may 2005!

Try for a longer shutter time, you will gain more detail from the bike and the around the bike.

My attempt at panning, I'm going to have to practice more as this didn't turn out perfectly but its not too bad IMO.

The issue was the lighting from the bike with the headlight/bulbs, it started to created a lens flare.

seer_claw
05-20-2007, 06:54 PM
Then an HDR image might work for you better to bring out the bike without creating massive flares.

If the pictures of the bike was with a tripod you could have always taken a photo in place with the lights off and a really long shutter speed to get all the details from the bike then take one with the lights on and photoshop them together would probably produce a really interesting effect.

teggypimp95, I find the last picture the only one that works well. Reason I say this is because the bright light above the car doesn't allow a proper exposure for the vehicle itself, which I would imagine is the main subject.

Try fooling around when you have your to flash go off, or how strong your flash is. Sometimes this can "fill" in the underexposed areas while keeping the light above properly exposed. Just be careful not to over-do-it with the flash, that horrid flash burn looks like ass.

BerserkerCatSplat
05-22-2007, 11:30 AM
Yep, strong backlighting needs a fill flash to expose the subject properly.

teggypimp95
05-22-2007, 11:32 AM
So since those picture used the longer exposer, just the flash going off once would be enough to light up the car more? Thanks for the tips!

BerserkerCatSplat
05-22-2007, 11:38 AM
That depends on the aperture. Smaller aperture needs a stronger flash to properly expose and vice versa. Shutter speed won't affect flash exposure.

teggypimp95
05-22-2007, 11:40 AM
How would i have the flash go off, but not see the refection off the flash in the doors and windows? This is a good idea. When i was playing with it last night i couldent get the car quite bright enough. Would i have been able to get it better if the light above wasent as bright?

BerserkerCatSplat
05-22-2007, 11:51 AM
In all honesty, the best way to fill flash without getting reflections would be with an off-camera flash.

If the light above it wasn't as bright, then yes, the car would expose better. When your camera meters a scene, it tries to balance the exposure across the frame. Unfortunately, you've got a really, really bright spot (light) and a really dark spot (car), so the camera tries to average the correct exposure for both areas. Digital sensors don't have enough dynamic range (heck, even film couldn't expose that scene correctly) to do both, so the light ends up overexposed and the car ends up underexposed. Try spot-metering the car and see where that gets you. (Car will be more correctly exposed, but the light will be blown out. However, it's probably worth the experimentation.)

teggypimp95
05-22-2007, 11:54 AM
Thats a great idea thanks. I was thinking about moving the metering for next try. I do have a big flash that could connect on top of the camera, but i could hold it on its own to help with the lighting.

I think i did the best i could with that spot and no flash. The light was tricky.

Thanks! Yeah, I'd say it's one of my more frequented photo spots, especially now that the weather has warmed up . It's great practice for motorsports, as in leaning how to keep your framing correct on a moving subject. I rarely if ever crop any of my photos, I'm a total stickler for getting the composition right the first time.

What did your PP consist of on that specific shot Trev? What was your camera setup as well?

clem24
05-25-2007, 01:55 PM
TeggyPimp, those exposures are quite long. Just hand hold the flash and fire it manually... You can even run around and light up different parts of the car while the shutter is open.

teggypimp95
05-25-2007, 01:56 PM
Thats a good idea i was thinking about that. Do i need to make my exposures a bit shorter? I was also going to move the metering to just the car on my next try.

What did your PP consist of on that specific shot Trev? What was your camera setup as well?

Standard editing (Levels, curves, Smart Sharpen), I did some light shadow burning on the clouds, and cloned out some distracting elements. A little more editing than usual, but not really all that heavy.

Camera was the ol' D50 with the Tamron 17-35 at 32mm, 1/500th @ f/13, ISO200. No filters. Should probably have gone to 1/1000th, but whatever.

Yes and no. It all depends on what effect you're trying to achieve. For starters, I would decrease exposure big time b/c that light is really distracting. The star effect from the headlights is also quite distracting. It just looks like you have blinding HIDs. As well, the effect of the star is also way too big. I mean, they look cool, but it just doesn't work in those pictures.

Your best bet: it's warm, film is free. Just experiment.

Love that first shot, Josh! Amazing that you could get close enough to shoot it at 70mm.

Can f/2.8 turn aluminum siding into an interesting background? Yes, it can!

4FT? Holy fawk, the only time I tried photographing hummingbirds, they wouldn't let me get within 12 feet of them! I got so frustrated that I tried to set up a focus trap in the tree with bungee cords holding my camera in place. It might have worked, but the damned birds never came back. :banghead:

It is by no means a great photo but I wanted to share. It's Dave from The Killers. I was at the concert on Thursday, floor seats, first against the stage

That BMX one is really good Berserker. Nice texture on the concrete and the subject's not too shadow-ey.

Thanks, G! It took some pretty strong fill flash to get the rider exposed correctly with the strong side-lighting. You been out shooting lately?

Nope, not in many months. I might be going sledding next weekend though.
