Just got this off a mailing list, thought some of you might find it interesting :D

Don't miss exclusive LIVE coverage as Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya swap hot rods on June 11 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

SPEED Channel will strap in with four-time NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon and Formula One standout Juan Pablo Montoya as the pair swap hot rods for the afternoon on June 11 at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The two-hour, live program, entitled Gordon/Montoya Tradin' Paint, will begin at noon ET and be hosted by Bob Varsha, former NASCAR crew chief Larry McReynolds and former F1 mechanic Steve Matchett. Both drivers will be wired for sound and the cars will be equipped with multiple on-board cameras.

"We hear a lot of speculation from SPEED viewers about who is the best driver out there these days," said SPEED Channel President Jim Liberatore. "Jeff Gordon and Juan Montoya are two of the most talented racers in the world, so this special will offer an entertaining glimpse into how these two might fair in different machines. For SPEED Channel, it's a great opportunity to bring fans of both NASCAR and open-wheel racing together for one event."

Montoya did his share of ovals during his CART days.

Yeah, when he was racing for Target-Ganassi he did an oval for the first time and said it isn't really hard, it's only two turns.
I think he won that race too IIRC.

I would think that nascar would take quicker reflexes because you are going between 150 and 200 mph in VERY close proximity to tons of other cars. F1 would take better forward thinking and planning. Remember, an F1 car is MUCH better designed, and sticks to the road like glue compared to a nascar car, the nascar car would be much easier to lose control of.

IMO Rally drivers are the cream of the driving talent crop. Has there ever been a staged race like this but with a rally driver versus FI? NASCAR?

Yes, rally drivers are certainly the most versatile, as they have to drive in many conditions and road sufaces.... But put a rally driver in the drivers seat of any other pro motorsport and they won't be finishing 1st... with lots of time and practice maybe.

On pavement most rally drivers would get killed, but then on gravel things get reversed. Rally drivers are IMO the best overall drivers, since they have to be good on so many different surfaces in different conditions but a pavement specialist like an F1 driver would eat most of them for lunch on that one surface.

I remember one time when Makinnen got to drive an F1 car and he crashed it on the first lap :(

Michael Schumacher bashed the Rally driver's skills in the last edition of F1 magazine. Schuey says he can drive a rally car as good as any of those guys. Just because they're sideways all the time doesn't mean they're so hot... because those cars are made to be progressive sideways and easy to drift :).

The show was actually 1.5 hours not 2.

Montoya went out first in the stock car, then Gordon went out in the Williams F1 car.
Lots of interesting commentary and discussion throughout.

It should be on again at 5PM and 10PM this evening.

Very impressed with Jeff Gordon. After only 6 laps he was turning out times within a second of the qualifying cutoff at the US Grand Prix last year, he really started pushing that car hard after so little time. Montoya looked like he was having fun in Gordon's NASCAR, sounded like it was quite the different experience. Cool program :D

Jeff Gordon was like "I think I got the better end of the deal, this car is incredible!"

haha Montoya looked bored in the Nascar.

So how did JPM do in the NASCAR? Was he near qualifying times?

It was done on the US Grand Prix circuit (F1), and they have never done a NASCAR race on that track, so there is no qualifying time to compare it to.

The best lap time ever was Michael Schumacher+Ferrari with a 1:10.

Gordon+Williams got a 1:16.

JPM+DuPont Chevy was lapping around 20 seconds slower than Gordon+Williams, if you want to compare it to F1.

Thats pointless. Why have a comparision if there isn't any baseline to compare it to? What a useless program.

They tried to emphasize that it wasn't about which driver/sport was better, but about 'mutual respect' for each other and the cars that they drive.

I think the drivers, pit crews and commentators all had a good time by exchanging cars and learning from the experience.
At first, I wanted to see someone come out on top, but having one driver/sport looking bad wouldn't have been very diplomatic. :dunno:
