Canon after over a year finally announces their 4th S series IS model.
The S5 IS (skipping 4 because it is an unlucky number I guess, kinda like 13)

Consistance fav is the 12x zoom with the IS which is the natural selling feature. The stereo mic are cool to have and the fact that it can still use the optical zoom in the movie mode is a powerful win

Some expected upgrades are the 2.5 flip out screen, and surpizingly the hotshoe for the flash. If not for the lack of wide angle and RAW mode, this camera is a strong contender against the G7.

The next model, S6 IS needs to have at least a manual focus ring IMO

I don't know if it is an upgrade or not, but the faved SD800 IS will get a brother, the SD850 IS

From what I see, they went from 7 to 8 mp, lost the wide angle 28mm, making the 4x a little stronger (35-140mm) and added software (time laps which nikon tried once in the 3700 (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0310/03102801nikoncp3700.asp) )

Cool! Does this mean I'll be able to find a S3is for cheaper?

neato. a hotshoe! That really puts the S5 in a whole nother league for photographic creativity.

When the S5 comes out, yes. And if you want to go even cheaper, the S2IS is not significantly different from the S3IS.

I really have to wonder why Canon actually labeled the microphones "R" and "L". What am I supposed to do with this information?

Not to be a downer, but manually focusing with an EVF or an LCD would be guesswork at best.

One can dream. They did have it on their Pro1 and I guess it wasn't popular. It not their fault, the MF ring and the zoom ring was the same ring. When it was the zoom ring it sucked. That's what killed the Pro series line

I wonder how far off the Pro1 and and S5 are from each other
