Okay so im just trying to confirm this story i heard from a person at work.

story goes this guy says that if you take 94 octane that you buy at a gas station like a husky and add in a few mothball into the gas it will add octane.

now he said mothballs are 98 percent made of some checmical. and the other 2 percent is like fillers or something. now the reason why manypeople dont do this is because it has potential to ruin your engine with the 2 percent worth of something else.

im not goin to do this or anything im just wondering if its true.

I dunno, I just googled "moth ball octane"

Seems like some people think they work, I haven't heard of it myself though.

Adding mothballs will not "add octane". It hypothetically will add to the octane rating of your fuel.

Chemically, as naphthalene's chemical structure is more stable than isooctane, it will have a higher autoignition temp (525 vs 417 degrees respectively). However, just by adding a few mothballs it seems negligible. Besides, it's hard to guarantee what goes into mothballs so whether or not that's a good idea to just dump a few in your tank is beyond me.

Go to home hardware and ask for TOLUENE....thats your octane booster. There are guides to tell you how much to use, google it.

note to yourself tho, be careful handling it, its some nasty shit.
