Okay I need help. I should know this but I’m a clueless girl apparently. My brakes are making an insane noise. They started out by squeeling and now it sounds like there is a rock or something in there and it’s scraping like crazy. Does this mean I just need new brake pads? Would you suggest getting it done at the Saturn dealership so they can look for anything else that might be wrong? Or do you think I’d be just as good going to somewhere smaller? Money is an issue and I have a 50% off (up to $40 – hey it still helps) coupon for Crowfoot Brake and Muffler.

The dealership quoted me $340 plus tax... is this about average?

$340 is about right. $60-ish for the parts, three hours labour. You can probably get cheaper but if it's under warranty then you should go to the dealer.

Go to crowfoot brake and muffler if its cheapest. Iv used them for other things and they have been good. Anyone can change brakes so no need to go to a dealership.

you might want to get that fixed before the pads start digging into the rotors if it hasn't already started. if that happens it'll probably set you back another $100

from the sound of it, it already has. the squeeling that you hear first is a warning from the brake pad. After that, its grinding metal to metal. you probably lost braking already. You should get it done right away.

^+1, my friend actually had that happen to her as well, the pad grinded in a nice lip into the rotor.

Hey leah, it'd be cheaper if a friend could help you change them out. The fronts aren't to bad to do.

Okay so if it has already started grinding into the rotor, should I take that to the dealership or is Crowfoot still alrite? Or unless someone on here would be willing to help me, that would be splendid.

If it's already started to grind, you'll need them change no matter what. It doesn't really matter as to who to take it to, just b/c their gonna do the same work and parts will be similar anyways.

what end are you in?

I would personally bring it to a smaller place, not a dealer. There would be no warrenty on your brakes, $360 does sound about right for brakes to get serviced, through a dealer. I will keep an eye open for some one to do them for you. I would get them fixed ASAP, that happened to me and i waited too long. Then one day my brakes just went, and the pedal went right down to the floor.

Unfortunately Arif had to work late today but he's taking care of it for me tomorrow. I did, however, get a brake fluid flush, an oil change, and finally a driver's side mirror that I've been missing. Thanks for the help guys. Turns out it definitely was metal on metal. Worst. Noise. Ever.
