View Full Version : Recommend a good Acura/Honda shop for a second opinion please

I took my car to NW Acura for a maintenance appointment (96,000km), and they told me I need over $1200 in work done... (t-belt, front brakes, rear brakes, various fluids), but in my owners manual, the timing belt isn't even scheduled to be replaced until 160k. I've read somewhere before that the Acura dealers in Calgary are scammers... so I'd like to take it elsewhere for a second opinion.

Anyone with past experiences care to recommend a shop?

Thanks.

Calgary Honda has always been great for service, standard rates and honest people. Did you ask them why they recommended replacing the timing belt at this point? I would assume the cost for replacing the belt is at least half that quote.

To be honest that sounds about right. It adds up real fast when you get it all done at once.

I'm okay with the prices they quoted me, I just want to make sure that everything does need to be replaced and that they're not just making work.

When I asked about the timing belt, they said that they check the drive belts during the inspection and recommend it to be replaced based on the inspection.

Actually, thats true, but only for warmer climates, im pretty sure it says in the manual that if you are driving your car in sub -20 temps, then 100K....if you really dont want to get it done, then im sure you could stand to wait 2-4 more service intervals..

If you look in your manual you will see that there are two different maintenance charts.
There is the one for drivers that are in warmer climates and there is also one for drivers that drive their cars for 'four months a year in -5 degrees Celsius' (or something like that). Basically we fall under the more saver chart which says you should replace your timing belt and water pump every 100,000km.
I just changed mine at 195,000 and it cost about $1000. Freaking expensive.

Every honda I've owned has required timing belt prior to 100K. In fact, my second one is being done on the lude right now at only 113K..... F'in shitty auto-tensioners.

Likely not scamming you......not sure about the brakes. What are they doing? You should know if rotors/pads are worn out. If not, changing the fluid likely still couldn't hurt at 96k.

ouch... thanks

I guess i'll just bite the bullet

Brake work being done will be replacing the pads... not sure whether they plan on replacing the rotors or resurfacing. I'll have to check with them.

The manual did say 160000km, but probably in warmer climates. So for us in cold weather cities anywhere between 100k and 160k can be the time.

When I did my Prelude, timing belts and water pump etc cost just under $1000.

I think it's worth it to have the timing belt done now. It's good insurance because a snapped belt can cause a lot more damage. If you don't trust the mechanic take your timing cover and have a look for yourself. Make sure the belt is tight and that the grooves aren't showing on the smooth side of the belt.

Any of you take your Acura to Honda to get it done cheaper?
I hear good things about Silver Hill. I might use T&T though.

I change my timing belt and water pump at 100k. Used to take my old car to a small shop by CMS. They charged me 600 bucks. They fix a lot of Hondas there.
