View Full Version : Nice Watches Around $1000 to $1500....

ICEBERG

Need ideas on watches that are around $1000 to $1500 for a 37 year old. I know there was a thread on some nice watches here with price tags beyond my kids collage education. But I like something that is MORE reasonable in price. This will be more casual and almost everyday use. I like Omega, Tag, Tissot, Edox, ect...

If you guy's can post some pics and ideas of your favirotes around my price range that would be great...

Also where is a good place in Calgary to get a nice watch? I allways bought my watches in Europe, so if someone can recommend a good place in calgary that would be great.

Cheers,

Omega Speedmaster is #1 on my list as soon as I can part with the cash.

In retail? People recommend the Brinkhaus a good deal, I've never purchased anything there so I couldn't give first hand advice.

I like this watch but it's out of my price range. I am looking at something similar.

Omega seamaster professional ($1500USD). And if you want a slightly sportier watch, the Oris F1 Williams ($575USD).

Either way, shop online or at www.timezone.com in their sales forum. Both of these watches can be had for less than 50% what they sell for locally.

Watches are great, but it can become an addictive hobby.. Here is a pic of a few of mine (left to right):
Panerai Marina, Tag, Omega Speedmaster limited edition, Omega Planet Ocean (new 007 watch), Seiko Sportura, Seiko Auto Relay. Also have, not pictured, Rolex Daytona Chronograph, Breitling aerospace, and Omega X-33.

Omega is my recommendation, but you will need at least 1500-2000 to get into a used one..

My homies got me a Tissot MotoGP T-race watch for My Stag party last night! I've been wanting one of these for a long long time and I finally got one! woot

Then when my bride-to-be got home she told me that she had also got one for me as a wedding present. OOPS.. oh well, she got to return the one she bought and is now $600 richer again hehe

Love the brake rotor style Bezel and carbon face. Has a "tachometer" face etched in the back.

Why buy a Ferrari when all you need is a civic?

A coworker of mine is looking at selling an Omega Speedmaster "Moon Watch" circa 1960's I believe. Let me know if you're interested in taking a look and I'll get you his number. He'll be back in the country in a couple of weeks.

I bought a Movado Classic for about $650 or so... real clean watches and they have a crystal face to help protect from scratches.

sorry but thats a horrible comparison. When you buy a ferrari as opposed to a civic you get power, comfort, luxury, style, and so much more.
When you buy a 3000$ watch vs. a 300$ dollar watch you get the same thing( oh sorry, maybe a different wristband or hour hand), its not like paying 2700$ more for a watch will make it tell time better.

either way its his choice, i wanna know what he ends up buying though. , good luck on the hunt.

Why are you posting in his thread and why do you want to know what he buys? Just so you can say that he overpaid and should have bought a $50 timex instead? Or better yet a $6 watch from Zellers?

Comfort, luxury, style... choice words to describe watches. A watch "only" tells time, just as a car "only" gets you from A to B.

adamc
05-28-2007, 01:13 AM
uh yeah, the difference is in the workmanship, the accuracy, how rugged the watch will be over time, etc etc.

it's exactly the same, you're paying for a higher quality of workmanship.

you're not gonna hand a Timex down to your kids in 50 years like you would a Rolex.

im posting for the same reason that your posting. To give an opinion. And i never mentioned a 50$ timex or even a 6$ watch from zellers, i was saying that there are many nice designer watches that only retail in the hundreds.

So to each his own, if you like to wear the 3000$ watches go ahead. And i am wondering what he end up getting just to take a peak and see what it looks like after all the options presented, no need for you to think so negatively.

[ok so a car will get you from a to b, but it also has all the extra comforts and conveniences, a watch will let you read the time, and maybe a built in compass, the time in uganda, and the date... right on]

Edit: there could exist the possibility that there is that extra passion about watches that i just don't have, and thats why i would settle for a watch in the hundreds.

The OP asked for opinions on watches in the $1000-$1500 range, not whether or not he should spend that much on a watch. Since he's 37 years old, the only person that's telling him what he should be spending his money on is probably his wife.

Just because you'd settle for it, doesn't mean someone else should when they are obviously looking for something else

Keep you eye on costco, at times they carry some nice watches, some higher end stuff and they are considerably less expensive than retail. Not so much selection though...

seriously, :banghead: do you not understand anything i have written. I am not telling him not to spend that much, im just letting him know that there are some really nice watches in the 200-600$ range and that he should check them out. there is no where that i have written for him not to spend that much on a watch.:banghead: :banghead:

And your second part shows a lack of comprehension. You obviously didnt understand what i said. I am saying that there are obviously some people who have a bigger understanding and therefore a bigger passion for watches, me on the other hand i do not, and therefore i would not mind wearing a different watch. I am not saying "hey, since i dont wanna wear a more expensive watch, No one should!"

so just stop, either express an opinion or suggest an idea (which you have not done at all). And since you havent (but for some odd reason you keep telling me that the OP is looking for watches, and you continue to NOT stay on topic) you should probably stop responding to this thread.

In that price range you may want to look at Sinn or Fortis. They make really cool watches, and the craftmanship is top notch.

Hmm when so much about wearing a watch like that is image, I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for a Swiss Army. Doesn't look too different from my $250 Swiss Army watch.

I really like the Tag Carrera:

Rolex's appreciate in value, with some new models selling for > list price due to demand. It's not like buying a car.

Rolex is to watches as George W. is to Presidents IMO LOL....I will never buy one..they are ugly, overpriced and just plain blah.

Iceburns, the one I posted is automatic and a Chronograph...does your SA have the same features? Those 2 features (as I am sure you know) add a big bump to the price tag.

Where would you guys recommend buying a Rolex Seadweller from? Is there a good online source that is cheaper than local? I looked at timezone as suggested earlier but don't want used.

It retails somewhere around $6500.00 in Calgary IIRC.

Your not planning on paying retail are you. They will usually heavilly discount off retail.

Your best bet right now is to buy one on a trip to the US. The CDN $ is so strong that you should be able to pick one up for $4500 US.

Used is the way to go, specially if you are buying from watch enthusiests. You can save a few thousand dollars and get a new new watch, sometimes only a few months old.

Which dealer do you use? It has not been my expericen for Rolex dealers to "heavily discount off retail", specially not off the more popular models like the submariner and seadweller. At most I have seen 500-1000 AT MAX off retail.

Used isn't cool because it is a gift, not for me. I'd also like to know where they would heavily discount.

I was going to pick it up in Edmonton awhile ago (cash in hand) and ended up not because they weren't interested in even taking off the GST. Might be because I've got a bunch of ink on me, dress like a skid and look like I can't even afford a free lunch. Maybe they thought I was just going to try and steal it or something!

500 off retail is about $4500 US.

A dealer will almost always give you 10% off. In Vegas if you roll in with something nice on your wrist they don't even try and talk MSRP. They start at the 10% off mark and will often go 20% off.

Panerai Dealers in NA tend to be pretty snobby. My current was a gift from my parents bought in LA and the official store, but Tourneau also sells Panerai. I would generally buy Panerai overseas. Tokyo and Singapore have excelent selection.

The Omega I bought in Singapore ata nice discount. But Calgary Jewelery also gives pretty good discounts. They would be the place I would buy a Brietling if I were to get one, they had great prices.

i really like the look of the seamaster, my favorite would have to be the 60's vintage ones, but i have been looking around and i found this one but according the ebays guide it is fake!!

ercchry, this is my omega seamaster chrono auto from the mid 60's

It's exactly like this, except my bracelet has chunkier, more modern block links.

Enjoy :)

I like mine more. But congratulations on getting exactly what you wanted. Make sure you use it and don't just let it sit in a box.

Sorry for jacking the thread for a second. Since there are quite a few Omega owners here. Does anyone know a certified shop in Calgary that can service Omega? Mine was serviced a few years back and I might need one soon. I intend to keep the watch in good shape for as long as I can hopefully till way past my lifespan. I asked the guy at Birks a while ago and he told me that he has to send it to Toronto. I prefer it done locally to minimize possible damage during transit by dumbass.
