Mobil 1 - 5W 30 Synthetic. Oil filter doesn't really matter, because you'll be changing the oil every 5000km anyways. And no one give me any bullshit about 20 000km oil drain intervals.

whatever 10w30 oil - fram double guard. I have a semi-big oil leak, so i dont use synthetic, maybe (actually probably) i will after the rebuild.

Never use Fram. Did you guys not see the filter study? Those things are the biggest piles of shit on the planet. They also make the filters for QuakerState and Penzoil.....stay away.

Best oil that i have used:
Amsoil
Red Line
Mobil 1
Havoline

Best filters:
Hard Driver
Purolater
Wix
Dana
Factory

Castrol 0W30 for winter.

Castrol 5W50 for summer.

OEM oil filter. I wouldn't run the same filter for 2 years or 30,000 km as shown. I'll change it every 6 months / 8,000 km. In the photo, the filter is sitting on a CD for size reference.

Motul 300V 5W-40 with O.E mfg German filters. Change every ~6000km. Probably overkill, but I'd like it to last forever :)

If you do oil and filter changes at the proper interval (5000km or 3 months, whichever is first), then the Fram filter is perfectly fine. I personally use OEM filters, but I've used Fram, as well as K&N, and I see no difference what-so-ever.

Is it bad for an engine that has been run with non synthetic oil to change to a synthetic oil?

Cut a Fram filter in half and have a look at the construction, I cut one open and found a 1/4 gap at the bottom of the filter pleat..
Translation: The filter was purely ornamental and was doing didly squat..
Rotaries are notoriously hard on motor oils, I have found that the Wix which are also sold as the Napa house brand here are the best along with Kralinator... The oil stays cleaner for alot longer with those filters..
Wix sells a off-road Truck use heavy duty filter, oddly enough they have a crossreference in there for the Mazda 13b rotary, its got way more diameter than any other filter that fits that engine, its about a an 1.5" wider than the factory filter and typical Fram style filters, and it has a machined sprung relief valve, not a cardboard flapper....Maxt

U can get mobil 1 at Superstore, Walmart, Crappy Tire. Just look for them in the flyers cuz they go on sale every other week. Usually they are about $26-$28 for the 4L. They have mobil 1 for cars with Higher Milage, works great!!!

Awhile ago, Honda West offered a 3-pack of OEM filers for $25 plus tax. I believe those were for the 4th gen Civic and early 90's Accord. They include a drain plug crush gasket with each filter.

As for the oil, once you go to synthetic like Mobil 1, don't go back to dino oil. You can get it for less than $7 per litre at Wal-Mart.

how much oil would a 1.6L civic take? from the sounds of it, its cheaper just to pay a place to do your oil changes!

The owner's manual should give you the proper capacity but I remember it being something like 3.8 L.

It's almost ALWAYS more expensive if a shop does the work for you. If you use dino oil (i.e. regular cheapo non-synthetic oil), you can do it yourself for less than $15. It's just a hassle finding a place to properly dispose of the used oil.

well if its $26-28 for 4L of mobil 1 like someone said, then a 3 pack of filters for $25, then its more than $30 doing it on your own each time..thats without the price of a catch pan(prob cheap) and the disposal fees (like $2). I know blaskin and lane charges ~$30 for there base level oil changes..am i missing something here? :dunno:

Blaskin & Lane won't give you synthetic oil on a $30 change. Keep in mind that Mobil 1 is NOT "base level" oil. Blaskin & Lane would charge you AT LEAST $50 for a synthetic oil change.

If your changeing your own oil and buy individual quarts of oil you save a few bucks but can save more buying cases of oil. I usually just wait for a good sale on whatever oil Im useing and grab a few cases of it and it saves a good amount of coin over time..... though should only really change your own oil if you stay on top of all the fluids. otherwise just let the shops do it.

And for sure should always check your oil after you get home from getting it changed. Ive heard too many horror stories of people getting home with their motor 1,2 or more quarts low. and if left unchecked can add up to mucho cash in repairs and engine wear.

I drive a 96, so i don't even think i'm suppsed to put synthetic in? Can i put synthetic in if its been using normal oil for this whole time? will it damage the engine in anyway? :dunno: i'm a totally oil change newbie :D

most important thing is to just stay on top of the oils changes and get them done when the 3 months or 3,000miles is up. if your on top of the oil changes youll be fine with the regular oil. but if you'll sleep better with synthetic oil in your motor then that works too

my buddy was saying if we do the synthetic changeover, we would change it, then drive like ~100kms to make sure everything was burnt out from the other oil then do another change right away..does this sound right?

ive done that with cars in the past that I bought and were sitting for awhile wiating to be sold. or on a summer car thats been sitting all winter. changed the oil...drove it for a few days then changed the oil again. I was told it was a good Idea. so I did it cause extra 20 bucks wasnt a big deal to me. dunno if it helps alot or makes a difference. but definately cant hurt nothing if you got the coin kicking around and care about your car.
