I know there was a large thread about the Calgary smoking laws so I was surprised I haven't seen anything about the new Alberta law that will be implemented this fall (or I didn't search very well).

No smoking anywhere pretty much, including bingos and casinos. I was surprised Stelmach passed this. I also find it interesting that stores can't even show cigarettes anymore, they must be under the counter.

I smoke a lot, and I'm sort of glad they did this. I think it's a bit too intrusive, but I have a hard time giving a shit when smoking is killing me.

I wonder if Snus will make its way to Alberta now.

Snus has far less chemicals than cigarettes, way healthier, that guys mouth cancer is probably the result of chewing tobacco, way different from Snus.

i think people should only be allowed to smoke that shit on their own property...

i don't enjoy inhaling toxic fumes when i walk behind some punk ass downtown, blowing smoke in everyone faces.

I hate the people that stand behind my bay "outside" and talk to me while blowing the smoke inside. I dont find many considerate smokers, lately I haven't found many smokers at all which is perfect.

It will be funny to see people having to hide to smoke a cigarette.

Smoking ban will apply to First Nations: health minister
Last Updated: Friday, June 1, 2007 | 4:15 PM MT
CBC News

A day after saying Alberta's new smoking ban wouldn't apply to First Nations property, the provincial health minister said Friday the ban will apply to everyone.

On Thursday, the Progressive Conservative caucus decided to ban smoking in all public places and work sites in Alberta, but later Health Minister Dave Hancock told reporters the law wouldn't apply to First Nations.

"A number of provincial laws apply on reserves. This likely will not," Hancock said at the time.

On Friday, however, Hancock had a different message.

"It's my understanding that this law will apply … on reserve as well as off," he said.

Smoking is currently permitted in native-run casinos in Alberta, even though casinos in nearby cities do not allow customers to smoke.

Why would you be suprised at the Stellmach govt/ for this, they are quite left vs. what Alberta is used to. Doesn't suprise me at all that they are sticking their fingers in this as well.

it's bullshit, because the fuckin activists that otherwise would be out of jobs, are gonna keep pushing for more and more banning, because that's the only way they can survive... i dont smoke, and i actually like not having smoking in bars, but these cocksuckers take themselves way too fuckin serious... the next thing on the map is to ban all smoking in apartments and condos, and probably soon enough you wont be able to smoke in your own yard, coz heaven forbid the wing might blow a few particles of smoke toward your neighbour's kids 4 houses down...

also, i know you shouldnt be smoking in your house if you have little kids, and most people i know follow that religiously because they care about their children... great... but these fuckers will probably soon make it illegal to smoke in your own house period... first if you have kids, then they'll start expanding on that more and more too.... and wont you be pissed, when you send off your kids to camp for 2 weeks, but you still cant smoke in your house? ohhh, the smell will get in hte furniture, it'll still get the kids when they get back... shut the fuck up, that's all lies and bullshit...fuck the anti-smoking people

the way i see it, this is just a desperate atempt from Eddie boy to gain some support, and make it look like he's doing something... :thumbsdow :thumbsdow :thumbsdow you ran Ralph out of office, and now this is what we get.... a bunch of bottom feeders making it to the top, completely clueless to what's going on

The majority has no pull.. this country was built on concessions to minorities and that is what makes us Canada. That's completely irrelevant, but I felt as though I needed to say that. It was in reference to the Natives not having the choice.

I thought this was an interesting comparison.

he First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Health Canada reports the following facts on smoking rates in First Nations and Inuit communities:

* Sixty percent of on-reserve First Nations people between the ages of 18 and 34 currently smoke;

* Seventy percent of Inuit in the north between the ages of 18 and 45 currently smoke;

* Almost half of Inuit (46%) who smoke started smoking at age 14 or younger; and

* The majority of on-reserve First Nations people who smoke (52%) started smoking between the ages of 13 and 16.

These statistics are from the 2004 Baseline Study Among First Nations On-reserve and Inuit in the North, Environics Research Group.

The first image is Canadian smoking rates as whole around 20% presently.
The second is mortality rates, compare the smoking rates of natives versus overall of Canada, then check out the lung cancer mortality rates.

Personally i smoke and i wish that they would just ban smoking all together everywhere, even in your own house and they should also make it smoe kind of narcotic! It would be better for every one! No law suites against tobbacco companies and we will all live healthier!

Do you seriously think Ralph had any idea what was going on in his last term in office? He was on cruise control for the last few years knowing he was going to retire, the guy even admitted that he didn't have a plan for the boom. He was definitely an entertaining premier, and though his early years have mixed reviews he set us up for this boom, but then just sat back and did fuck all and figured that rather than using a massive surplus to aid Alberta's growth (what everybody in the province was begging for), he decided to give one last payout in order to gain support to cement his legacy.

Apparently you sold your heart and mind to King Ralph for a mere $400.

I disagree. Walking up and down on 17th this weekend and then waiting in line at the Ship, it just reeks outside now with everyone crowding the sidewalks and smoking. Several times I had to step on the road to get by assholes that were too busy smoking to get out of the way of people actually using the sidewalk for walking.

Ban smoking on sidewalks. Seriously. Let them hang out in the alley and smoke by the dumpsters where it stinks already anyways.

So first the non-smokers wanted it "out of their club" now its "off their sidewalk". Well, I want you to stop breathing "my" air.

Get over yourself.

I think his point was more to the line of "get the fuck out of the way of people trying to actually walk on the sidewalk". Not so much of, "quit smoking on the sidewalk". It probably wouldn't be such an issue if the smokers simply left room for passerby's to pass. But then again, smokers are pretty much as a group not very courteous, for proof, look at all of them that just drop their butts on the sidewalk, pitch it out the window, into the street etc.. No doubt there are many who are courteous, but the vast majority unfortunately are not.

During our spring walkabout, the wife and I cleaned up a full kitchen garbage bag of butts up in our neighborhood. A full bag of just butts. Thats in our little park, and along our street.

The majority has pull but on certain issues the majority doesn't care and thus don't get involved. I actually think its somewhat of a problem that the majority does have say on certain topics.

*Puts flame suit on*

Lets talk taxes, the majority loves having tiered taxes that force those who make more to pay a higher percentage. Typically those who make more are the most productive member sof society and hence get paid at a higher rate. Now why penalize them and disincent working harder to make more money ... because the majority aren't high income high acheiving individuals.

I sold my heart to individualism not a socialist spending monkey. Good for Ralph, you're right he went with a hands-off type of govt. style and look where it got AB vs. the rest of Canada.
