our car was involved in not-at-fault accident, and our insurance will cover up to $1000 of rental charges. Since all the reputable shops are booked to the max, we already used up the $1000 and the car is still at least 3 weeks + away from being repaired.

can/should we keep renting the car and then try to get the rental money back from the other guy's insurance company?? or just screw it and somehow try to work around with 1 less car.

same thing happened wit my brother last month.. just get in touch with the adjustor of the other insurance company and he/she will authorize further rental coverage. My brother had a rental car for 2 months!

The limit of your rental coverage should not apply. Because the other guy was at-fault, his insurance pays the full tab. Is your car not driveable?

It is normally up to the bodyshop to complete the repair within the allotted days for the repair, if they don't they usually have to pay the days over - but usually they can work it out with your insurance. Unless of course your insurance states otherwise - ie they will cover the first $1000 of rental and any over that is picked up by yourself or the bodyshop. If you are allotted 14days for repair on your vehicle and the bodyshop doesn't start repairs until day 16 it is their fault for booking the car in too early and have to pick up the cost. But if the car was not driveable it's another story. It's best to confirm with your insurance company exactly how they have it set up.
