View Full Version : The best beer

In response to the beerfest thread (and I hope that some attendees pipe in after the festival) what is your favourite beer (or 2 or 3)? Mine:

Czechvar/EuroBudweiser/Budvar Budejovice....same thing. Great beer, the original Budweiser. It's so good, some American decided to brew crap and put that name on it so it sells....it worked.
Zywiec: Have to give a shoutout to the Polish, since I am. Not as good as Czechvar, but if I get a little bored of Czechvar, that's the first place I turn
Stella Artois: The other place I turn. Maybe a bit too much alcohol taste to it, but sometimes, you want that. If I'm planning to pound back a ton of beer outside a bar, that's where I go. I can't get drunk off the other 2, as they are beers to savour, not chug.

I like Afflighem and stuff from Trappist. Also St. Bernardus (sp?) is really good too. I go to the willow park liquor stores and try new stuff all of the time. I find they have a great selcection and very knowledgeable employees. I will be at beerfest as well, never been before!

Also, Pilsner Urquell on tap in Prague was amazing, and so cheap! During happy hour you could get a liter (or 2 pints for you imperial-thinking bastards) for $1.50CDN at the bars. I can't wait to go back...

Hoegaarden, really? The last time I tried it, it seemed pretty bitter. Maybe my memory is bad, I'll have to try again.

Go to the Coop Liq Store beside Kincora. One of the better selections available in calgary and very close to Panorama.

Erdinger is not bad, really common over here, I prefer stuff from the Furstenburg or Paulaner breweries though.

Berg Braurei Ulrichsbier and Hefe Weizen are great too.

Hell any weizen beer is the shit, I prefer Kristall over Hefe though.

I can't believe I forgot about Hoegaarden. I have been meaning to try Erdringer. I think Willow Park has it. If you live in the Midnapore area and like a beer, go to Olympia liquor store, and ask them to get it in. They're pretty cool about that. They've got Czechvar now to save me the drive.

As far as the best beer I have ever had was back in Nova Scotia place called paddy's pub. They brew all their own beer. I had one that was called chimney sweep. Was so dark and black you couldn't see a finger dipped inside the glass. They also had a beer that was brewed and stored in wodden barrels like they did back in the day and you could taste the wood flavour in the beer. Very expensive but worth every glass I had

I picked up a tasters pack this evening and to my suprise (and somewhat delight) they removed the pale in place of the new white. Seems to be a new marketing push and because everyone recommended white I figured I would give it a try.

Granted there were only four, I found it to be pretty damn good. For some reason it still tasted somewhat like red to me.

Red stripe is also a great beer. It seems all the honda-tech fanboys have associated red-stripe for their rim rape :dunno: ...Not sure if anyone knows what I am talking about but yea...

If you're ever in Jasper, stop by the Jasper Brew Pub and try their Lifeline Cream Ale. All their beers are great, but that one is my favorite by far.

The taste of Guinness has a lot to do with how it's poured from the tap, if they pour it wrong it tastes like ass.

I was just in Munich and the name of the beer is slipping my mind. Several nights we went to the Hofbrauhaus and just asked for large beers... so it might have been the house beer. Has anyone been there and know what this would be called? It was NOT a dark beer. If you know what it is, are we able to get that anywhere in Calgary?

I was just down south so I decided to head to Willow Park to try some different beers but unfortunately I couldn't recall most of the names of beers mentioned in this thread except rickard's white, which they didn't have, and la fin du monde so I picked up a 6 pack of that, as well as 2 more beers from the same brewery. A white beer, Blanche de chambly and Ephemere framboises.

I'll write up a review when I try it.

Edit: Just finished up the 26oz bottle of ephemere framboises
-nice darkish red colour
-overall pretty smooth going down, the raspberry taste is subtle while drinking and leaves a nice after taste

Edit #2:
Tried the blanche de chambly - pretty pale, sorty of milky colour, also very smooth and pretty much zero aftertaste, would buy this one again
la fin du monde is some pretty strong beer, 9% has a bite to it but still one of the better beers i've tried

I was at the Hofbrauhouse a couple weeks ago, if you got the one in the 1L mugs it was probably Hofbrau Dark or Original, they were both very good.

Oh Guinness, so absolutely delicious, I can drink so much and not get a hangover, its just...magical.

Though it isn't exactly a summer beer, when I'm sitting on my porch on a warm July evening, I do love a lice chilled bottle of Keiths or Kokanee. I also enjoy the Big Rock brands, Trad mostly.

And though I'm not a fan, I'm pretty sure I saw Rickards White served at the Seanachie a couple wings nights ago, so I'm assuming that Dixon's, Limericks and Killkenny serve it as well for those that want to know.
