So my GF and I are renting an older house (POS house) because it just doesnt make sense for us to buy at the moment when we likely wont live in Calgary for longer than a couple years.

The place has a garage, but it's SCARY. DIY wiring all over the place. I dont want my rides burning up in an electrical fire.

I also want to see if the garage is wired for 220v for a compressor (no visible 220 outlets but a couple open junction boxes). If not, how feasible is it? I've read a couple online how to's but dont feel comfortable enough with that kind of juice to do it myself.

Are there any electricians on here who want to take a look at it and give me a professional opinion? I dont mind paying, but if someone wanted to take a look for a case of beer or something that would be even better ;)

It's in the Penbrooke area if anyone is nearby.

Has anyone else wired up their own 220 in the garage?

Is the garage attached to the house... .. .
Get a Power Inverter for your compressor... .. .

No sorry it's a detached garage.

And a power inverter? I've never seen anything like that for 220v. Just those crappy little 400W-1500W things for running appliances in your car. Got anymore information?

you should buy a multimeter and check the voltage in the box to see if it's 220v

if not and you want 220v, you will have to run new wires from your house panel to the garage

btw. do you have a sub panel in the garage?

If you can get the 3000 Watts it should be enought for a compressor... .. .

In order to get a 220 Volts running to your house you need to call enmax to run a seperate power line from the transformer.

Were running on line to line system 55V - 0 - 55V you need to have a 110 V - 0 - 110V line to get get your 220 Volts... .. .

Nope, no subpanel in the garage. I suppose I could search through boxes for the next few hours trying to find my multi-meter :(

Um, are you sure about that? Last time I checked all houses were supplied with a 120/240V service?

I've got a house from the 70's. Just a plain jane 100 amp service and I've got 4 different 220 outlets. dryer...two plugs in garage and then ran a 40 amp gfci circuit for the hot tub.

Ok, Check in your house which breaker turns off for the garage.

2 pole breaker (2 slots)

Can be either two different 120V Lines

Probably 15A Breakers

or....

A Two Wire single service of 240

Proabably a 30 A breaker

This is what a 220V service looks like, you probably don't have it.

Ovens and dryers are rated at lower (220V), because of the motor/ heater rating
