Hi everyone, I'm considering getting an 87 rx7 t2 for a fairly cheap price but it's condition is fairly crappy. It drives but has trouble starting up and idles really rough. I just want to know which shops around town could get it up and running for a decent price. I've owned nothing but fwd's and just want to try rwd so this is kind of a tester car. thanx for any input :)

I would spend another 2k and get one that runs well. If you end up needing a new motor because the seller bullshits you, you'll wish you had. If it doesn't run right, don't beleive anything the seller says, hard to start and rough idle could mean you need a whole new motor.

werd,
unless you can find a replacement motor, which are hard to come by these days. And most of the time they'll need to be built anway.
RX7 specialist is the suck, i just started on my swap and couldnt believe the heck job they did for the previous owner.:banghead: Shits missing everywhere and its ghetto as hell

Good point -- alot of FC's have been worked over pretty hard, either by unknowledgable shops, or owners not willing/wanting to spend the $$ to do something right. I would look for a clean car with the orginal motor, in some cases a rebuilt motor may not be the best scenario, it depends on what was done during the rebuild. If he doesn't have a reciept for the rebuild, i would walk away.

Thanks for all the responses guys. But too late to back out now, just bought it tonite for $900,real piece of crap, but at that price, I don't think u can ask for much more lol. Quite the adventure driving to my house though. Stalled and stuck in 3 intersections, stalled in the middle of my alley for a good 10 minutes trying to restart it. Oh yeah, smoke started coming out the the hood half way home ,got worse as i got closer to home. Only cool thing bout this trip was the turbo activated on mcknight,no experience w/ turbos felt neat, oh yeah it was after that the smoke got thicker haha. So that was probably one of my scariest driving experiences ever, when I finally got home I hugged my EG lol.
Anyway that's enough rambling but I am still looking for a shop other than rx7 specialties. I've heard bad things about them overall and very few good things. So, any other shops/suggestions? Thanks again! :)

With the lack of quality rotary shop at the moment, its best to learn and start fixing it yourself. Go read up rx7club.com, search up some of the achieves and im sure you'll find something helpful. These engines are actually not that complicated.

You bought that car from Zach?

That car has some issues no doubt. It will require some serious work as you found on the drive home, but for $900 it's a good place to start. The compression on that motor looked ok if I remember correctly, it's got some electrical gremlins though.

Stay away from RX-7 Specialties.

A good mechanic is a good mechanic, the car is just a car other than the motor so find yourself a good mechanic, or start into it on your own.

It's got GREMLINS AHHH!!! lol But seriously, I appreciate the response. I just don't have time to work on this thing nor do I know where to begin, that's why I posted it for sale not too long ago. If no one takes it then I think I'll work on it eventually, Either way will work for me. In the mean time still learning about this car,If I sell it now I'd still like to own an FC down the road. They're old but sexy cars, I remember playing this arcade game w an rx 7 turbo 2 back in 1989 and wanting to own one someday lol
Okay I've yapped long enough thanx again:)

Thanks dude, that makes me feel better about the purchase, but there is quite a bit of body work needed which makes it that much more frustrating lol:D
