I have a friend with a 1998 and he loves it. Has had it for 2 years and has not had any major problems. It has the 5-speed and he says he wouldn't change it for the world (although he has not had any experience with the auto). They seem to be very reliable SUV's, pretty good on gas, and great resale value.
It also depends on what you want to use it for. I know the newer ones have the more powerful motor if you are looking to tow something

As its been stated before, the 3.3L are very weak and anemic.....if you can go for a 3.5L model as its worth it in the end

But yes as for reliability, Pathfinders are built like mofo's and can take a beating, if your planning on going off-roading and such, then 5spd but for daily city driving I say auto...but good on gas?HAHAHA yeah right...unless your talking about the 3.3L cuz my 3.5L guzzles it up almost like a damn V8

I was talking 3.3, I think all 1996-2000 were 3.3. (and I am talking relatively good mileage compared to other SUV's)

I owned a 93 with an Automatic. They are VERY reliable in my experience. I had 380,000kms on my VG30 and it still ran perfect.

My Last one was a 95 5-Spd. Its the last year of the hard-bodies. They are called that because they are built more like a truck, like older 4Runners.

Im all for the older pathfinders over the newer ones. I highly recommend them myself.

Go for the 1995 and older. The 3.0L doesn't feel any weaker than the 3.3L used in 1999 - 2000 and you will save a bunch of money. I owned a 1995 and to be honest, I preferred it over a bunch of 1996 -2000 models that I drove. The suspension was stiffer on mine, more like a truck. The 1996 - 2000 had a pile of body roll.
