Am I using the wrong oil

I went over to my local candian tire the other day and got told by 3 people (including the head foreman in the shop) that my 1997 vw jetta GT takes 5w-50, the only 5w-50 they had was synthetic. Am I using the right oil because when i bought the car it didnt have a manual so I couldnt check. Thanks

use motul 5-40 its formulated for VW:nut:
