Someone mentioned that your passport can't expire in the next 6 months if you are entering the US. Is that true?

I checked here:

http://help.cbp.gov/cgi-bin/customs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=194&p_created=1043364937&p_sid=GjbVloDi&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=946&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MjgmcF9wcm9kcz0wJnBfY2F0cz0wJnBfcHY9JnBfY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1QYXNzcG9ydA**&p_li=&p_topview=1

But I don't see it mentioned.

Any body got any facts?

Ok, I called the airport pre-clearance office.

They said that it needs to be valid for at least 6 months.

They said in lieu of that, you can apply for a new one and the receipt is good enough with a license as you have to turn in the old one.

I know this is the case for certain EU countries, but I can't imagine they would enforce that for Canadians entering the US.

This should help:

http://www.ppt.gc.ca/help/faq.aspx?lang=e&id=1102

EDIT: funny how the Canadian Passport office would post incorrect info on this compared to the place you called. Guess it depends who you want to believe.

I'm pretty sure whoever you called was confused. The fact that it's on the website, and the fact that you don't need a passport at all to enter the US if you go by car, means the 6 month rule wouldn't make much sense. That only applies to Canadians entering the US though.

Are you sure about that last part ??

When I renewed mine this spring they gave me back my old passport. They just cut the corner off of it for some reason.

Just wondering thats all....

That is what the US pre-clearance dude said. I am just going to risk it. I have plenty of documentation that says I am coming back to Canada. Plus, I am going to take of copy of the Canadian link that says it doesn't matter.

Please read again.

I have had my passport for 4.5 years. It is only valid for another 5 months.

someone said to me that I am required to have at least 6 months remaining on my passport.
