My cousin has a 2002 Subaru WRX.

He has a cold air intake, 3" catback, bigger downpipe, and a few minor things.

He says the tranny is only good upto 340hp. Is that true?

He wants at least 300-350hp for the time being.

What can he do to beef up the tranny? What is it that breaks?

Should he do a turbo upgrade or a chip to get 300-350hp?

I think you're really only going to get that kind of power if he upgrades his turbo -- fuel pump -- and then injectors. Granted I don't know anything about the WRX -- however I do know a thing or two about turbo's and what they can and can't do.

His options for beefing up the tranny are somewhat limited. Either swap the gears in the stock tranny for dog gears, or replace the whole transmission with a STi 6 speed. Neither are easy/cheap to do.

If he's interested, I have an extra catless BPM uppipe for the wrx. Uppipes are one of the best bang/$ upgrades for the wrx.

I think the up-pipe is the next step for sure. A manual boost controller and gauge are a must for someone who is looking for that kind of power too. (Although he probably already has those)

I think he might have done the up-pipe.

In case he hasn't, how much would you want for the up-pipe?

What kind of turbo upgrade should he do?

So the gears are what break in the tranny?

Is the STi tranny $12,000???

get rid of the CAI. it doesn't do shit. get an electric boost controller, the stock turbo is good up to 16psi. if he doesn't have the up pipe, get the bpm of tulit. i have the same one.

i think your cousin has pretty much most of the basic mods done, which makes quite a difference. as for the tranny, unless he's doing constant 6k drops. i've heard of guys down in the states that are still using their original tranny and still making big power. it's all in how you take care of your car. :)

What brand boost controller should he get? Where could we get it from?

I was reading on a wrx forum a while back about the need for fuel mods right away? Is there any truth to that?

I can tell you for certainty that WRX trannies don't like 300+ hp if you truely intend to put that power to use. Any vehicles at AVS pushing over 300 are recommended to do a 6-speed STi tranny swap. The tranny is definately a weak-spot for this car.

STi tranny can be done for well under $12k.

i heard you cant get serious power out of the WRX turbo, the psi is already at its max.. :dunno: , dont most serious WRX tuners swap in a new turbo?

I found a thread on nasioc.com in the Vendor For Sale thread.

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=375198

That should give you an idea of what you're getting at what price. :)

$6000+ shipping

That will be very close to $12G by the time you ship it here with the duty and taxes etc.

if your cousin is doing track racing id sugggest hed get 5th gear swapped out. 5th gear sucks for racing, that gear is just for like leisurely cruising, doesnt do good on the track IMO.

also a short shifter comes into mind. kartboy i hear is good. but some people say the shaft thing is too short for just daily driving. but either than that its pretty good. and ILP's short throw shifter is the one we're looking at getting. the shaft is about .5" shorter than stock, and the pivot point is placed higher. there's the STi short shifter which is IMO way too expensive! ($269.00, internet pricing) i've also heard Cobb has quite a shifter. its like adjustable or something. (these shifters start from $190ish+)

correct me if im wrong. :D
