Make that, she spotted us!

Hello Wisconsin! 93 mph in a 65mph zone. Boy was she pissed! The best part, it wasn't me... hahahahhaha co-driver FTW! $296 fine. 6 points on my co-driver's Wisconsin License (something she doesn't hold) And a mandatory court appearance!

There was some great architecture in Chicago. Pics are on the other cam. But here are some interesting pics.

Who would of thought that I would pass this street of all streets on the way to the dealer from the Airport:

http://www.benyl.com/Beyond/M3/1.jpg

How the hell is this guy supposed to get out of that spot? Both the front and rear bumpers are touching the respective cars. Haha, I would hate to be the guy that owned that car.

Ontario street in Chicago.

The Sears tower. Look at the traffic we are about to join...

Navigation telling us how to get the fuck out of dodge. But it doesn't know that everyone else is taking the same route!

Some pics are courtesy of rage2.

Car is a 2003.5 M3 Cab SMG. Carbon black. One owner. California car. It was a lease return that was picked up at auction and sent to Chicago. Which is great as I won't have to worry about rust...haha

It has a few more kms than rage2's car, but it was already lowered, has wheels, OEM nav, aluminum trim, exhaust and tint.

Basically don't have to anything to it but drive it.

Thanks to rage2 and Mr.X for finding it and checking out.

Wow beautiful car man! Great purchase. If you don't mind me asking how much did you end up paying for it, after all the taxes and everything?

I am thinking of bringing a car down as well, not anytime soon and might not even be a M3, not too sure yet. But just wondering what sort of taxes are involved? Is it like 13% or something on non-American cars. I brought my bike from down there, a few years back. Don't really remember properly.

The price changes everyday. Exchange is getting better and better.

6% GST + 6.1% duty + a bunch of other fees.

And that 6.1% duty is that only for non-american cars, or all the cars? Say if I bring down a Viper, would I still be paying that, since it's an American car?

The thermometer is user selectable. The odometer requires a dealer flash.

The BMW dealership actually did it for me without asking. I guess when I asked for the DRLs to be turned on, they assumed I wanted kms on the odometer as well!

BMW service is SO much better in the US. The dealers here in Calgary could learn a thing or two from them. The service here in Calgary is making me rethink getting a 335 cab.

anything built in america, including honda accords, does not require duty. Anything built outside of north america does not fall under free trade and thus requires a tariff.

Dammit... I gotta get a few options flashed here... hope I don't get ripped off. Need to turn on those follow me home lights too. Should've done 'em down there but didn't know there's so much shit you can configure till I got home and RTFM.

yeah, it would be nice if BMW made everything user selectable like GM does... haha, something that GM does right!

It is strange that no one has come up with an aftermarket solution. I think that it probably has to do with the fact that BMW dealers in the US don't charge for this service. VW/Audi guys have something called a VAGCOM that allows you to do some of the programming yourself (I think).

It'll be tough to find a good condition car at that price. Benyl and I looked at about 150 different cars, about 20 in person (friends in the states) at that price range too, and found absolutely nothing. All were garbage, crashed, not straight, problems, etc. We ended up paying a bit more for much higher quality cars. Then again, we were looking for cabs and SMG.

You should be able to find a mint 01 non SMG coupe at that price.

so how much did it run you for cab + sMG? 45kCAD?

wow, going thru 150 units and viewing 20+ one really needs the time to make it worth while, not just money.

There are a couple ok 02's for that price if you really search around, it is just they will likely lack options and have higher mileage as I have been searching for m3's along with s2k's to find something to get, the sweet spot for m3s though is around 35k us

Aside from bringing the car in for inspection, do you really have to depend on your own knowledge and judgement in order to figure out what cars shitboxes and what is good? can not the complete inspection detect the slightest of defect?

Otherwise it would suck if you know nothing about cars and end up a piece of crap.

Is it a bad idea to bring a BMW car to a BMW dealership for inspection?

yeah with VAGCOM you can adjust a TON of stuff right down to engine settings. It also lets you do logging of a lot of things. Definately a great tool.

We both had ours inspected by BMW before purchasing. It is a good idea.

The reason we got 2003.5 is because of the Engine warranty. I don't know about rage2's car, but I have engine warranty until September 2009. Some of the 2002 cars expire this fall and early next year.

the only thing i can stress would be do your research. find out as much as you can about the problems and recalls.

It is probrally the best idea to bring a bmw to a bmw dealership to get inspected. Because when you take it for inspection they will either pass it or fail it and most of the time the technician doing the inspection will make numerous comments about the car. Because in the end if you take it to BMW and they pass it and comment that the car is in good condition and something goes wrong that they inspected i am pretty sure they would almost be liable for it.

My engine warranty is good till June/09.

I've heard lots of horror stories of guys importing cars from the states sight unseen, so with that in mind we both got our cars fully inspected at BMW dealerships, as well as seen in person and test driven by my brother (I actually test drove benyl's car on my last day in Chicago). I test drove 4 different M3's after I picked my car up and they all had weird issues. Some felt sloppy, one had a cracked rear subframe, and the others the bumpers and stuff just didn't line up right at all.

The original car I wanted was a Black (not carbon black) M3 Cab SMG with Dinan S1 package with less miles and for less money than the car I bought. Once my brother saw it in person, turns out every single piece up front (bumper, hood, covers) didn't line up, and one of the fog lights wasn't even wired in. Shitty repair job. From the pictures, the car looked mint and I was actually really excited to get that one.

I can tell you right now that I would NOT recommend this process unless you see the cars in person. It's shocking how many POS BMW's there are out there. Oddly enough, used Benz's are in great shape down there, rarely any accidents, but importing one is a whole different process in itself that's an even bigger hassle. You're better off paying a bit more money for an already imported M3 where you can see it in person here.

Well you can't really do that either haha... unless u feel like sticking around for a few days before coming home. You need to pay and get the title stuff sorted out and faxed to the border, where you'll have to wait 3 business days before you can import the car lol.

benyl
07-10-2007, 02:22 PM
They will not let the car out of the country until a lien check has been done. 72 hrs...

Canada will turn you back if you try to skip the US side.

rage2
07-10-2007, 02:24 PM
And if you get a car with a lien... you won't get a title for 30 days. Without the title, you can't import. Just ask any of the 100 cars parked near sweetgrass waiting for their titles! (including a beyonder and his porsche ;)).

Launch control, don't forget that. It's also better for fuel economy... I find that in a 6 speed when I'm driving hard, I always keep the engine revving high in case I need to go again. With the SMG, as soon as I'm done a maneuver, click click click into 6th right away to save fuel again haha.

I'm averaging 17.2mpg driving like a complete asshole. I think BMW states 16 so I'm doing better!

question to either rage2 or benyl

with the top closed, how is it inside as far as noise level goes?

benyl
07-11-2007, 10:37 AM
Pretty quiet. It is a high quality top.

rage2
07-11-2007, 11:17 AM
It's definately louder than my SLK32, but it's not as bad as I thought it'd be. I'm not sure why, but my right side (passenger side) seems to let in more noise than my left side... not sure if it's cuz I'm sitting right beside a window on my left and exposed to the whole top on the right. No leaks from pressure washing so it's not like there's a gaping hole or anything, maybe just me not used to the soft top.

The noise level with the top up at 250km/h is good enough where I barely have to turn up the stereo.
