Hey guys,
I'm sort of new in posting here at beyond but I've been looking around at cars for a while now with a desire. Now I have started seriously saving up and by the end of summer I'll have around $4,000 to $5,000. I currently reside in Calgary.

In case you're wondering, I'm 16, and this will be my first car that I will buy, so make my experience worthwhile. (No joke, but my dad knows alot about cars so any bad deals will be shunned)

My interest is in any cars that's not american. Although if you give me a link with a decent offer, I will look over it. I originally wanted a Toyota MR-2 but I most likely can't save up that much by the time summer ends.
I'll list some things which I am looking for in a car, but I can also be quite flexible so give me any suggestions and in return you'll get a look.

I want:
A car around $4,000 - $5,000
Non-American
Anything over 1988
A car which does not have over 175,000kms (Try me)
Something that runs great
Power windows/locks
Something preferably AWD or FWD but I'll look at any other ones.
Preferably Manual
Basically no rust at all

And that's basically the list, like I said I'm also open to anything you throw at me so try me.
Feel free to pm me or reply to this thread or even email me at [email protected]

from experiance, get something dirt cheap that runs and has atleast 4 seats, a suv or truck would be best

drive that till you crash it or for 2 years, if you do crash it within that 2 years then do it all over again, if not then get something nice

i say this because at 16 i dont know very many people that didnt get in an acident, there fault or not...

if you still want a cooler car get a rx7 (fc) or even a fb, cheap sporty and fun as hell, the way they handle is awsome, another good choice would be an older explorer, you can take out curbs and hit ditches with them and keep going

Hey just a suggestion. If you were originally looking into an mr2, maybe look around for a first gen mr2. They're alot cheaper than MKII mr2s and are still fun as hell to drive. Best part is, they fall in your price range

Hey guys thanks alot for the suggestions. I appreciate people actually reading what I wrote down and put their own opinions to other people out.
Now I'm just wondering where I can find any of the stuff you guys are saying that is around my price range and requirements. An RX-7 would be great, but since they're new in imports they might be a bit expensive, I'll kill to find a decent RX-7 around 150,000km and my price range lol.
And for the MR-2 yeah it's great, I would want an older generation one as well, that's why the year requirement I put down is 88 and up. since the older ones are made up til 1990. then it's the SW20s.

So, if you guys find anything like that, please let me know!

Also, just wondering, but do you think around 150,000km is decent? Like for what I'm looking for, is it rare?

rare? i dunno, but again not worth it for your first car, since also at 16 full coverage is too expensive and at the price its really on the edge of being worth it so a cheaper car would be better in my opintion...

so my buddy just picked up a 86 rx7 with 30 000km on a rebuild for 1100 and the body is in great shape and something like that would be great for a first car, fun, cheap, and aftermarket is pretty good too.

here is why i say its not worth it, bought this car for 4500 drove it for a year and one day on my way to school i got t-boned because a car was speeding and since i was turning left its my fault so after working for a year (part time but still 30 hours a week) and putting every cent i had into it i lost all of that money and had nothing to show for that year of hard work

I had a Volvo 740gl as a first car.

IF you can, try looking for an early 90's 740 turbo, it's rear wheel drive, reliable, and indestructable.

I drove the thing through 3 foot snow drifts without scratching it, drove over curbs and did all sorts of stupid shit to it, and it ran at 300 000km the same as it did at 100 000km.

Edit - t5r or 850r if you can find one, 240 hp, 0-60 in under 6 seconds, not sure if they're down to the 5g range yet.

Alright, sorry for my incompetence but when you said that, "rebuild for 1100" you mean it was damaged or something was broken and he had to pay a bit to get it fixed right?

Something like that isn't a bad idea for me, and I was pondering that myself. But since I'm new to this, I'm not sure how easy it is to find a car like that. Basically any japan made car with low mileage and some things to work out is what I'm thinking of.

If you don't mind, can you please aid me in trying to find a car? Since you're on the forums anyway, if anything catches your eye, please let me know :D Thanks

-spend the extra couple hours finding out how to import a car [u]properly ( think theres a thread about it on here)
-put a couple hundred dollars aside for a greyhound ticket to the us and for some shit youl have to do to it to get it insured here ie:spedo converted
-go to ebaymotors.COM, or cars.com (some kind of american car classifieds website), and pick a car
-if everything looks good say you want it inspected a dealership of your choice(so he doesnt run his own inspection and screw you over). get a carfax done
-buy the car and POSSIBLY save yourself thousands of dollars from not buying one here in canada
-There is risks involved with online buying, but as long as your safe and smart and DONT RUSH, you can find some good deals in the states.

I think this is the smartest way to buy a vehicle right now, and at the dollar being this strong, you can still find plenty of good cars in your price range

if i was going to by from the states i would find a bunch of cars i liked in seattle or some other big city that is close, and go down with a buddy and check em out and buy the best one and then bring it back, and what are you talking about speedo convesion? american cars still have km on them just like we still have mph on ours

keep an eye on the papers and forums. I bought my first car from the herald for 3250 and it was a 87 325I power everything and standard. There is lots to be found but you hafta be patient and look.

Like most the guys said though full coverage is an arm and a leg when u first get your license so get a car that is cheap and u won't cry over if something happens.

There are tons of 240's blowing around with 150k. Check some of the used car lots... my bro just got rid of his SVX to one not to long ago and i think i saw it posted for 5500

You need a nice classic ride like this one.;) Flexible on the price for the next few days, then it head off to the classic car auction. Only 107 kms. Get something that will be unique on the road, instead of a run of the mill Honda, VW, Toyota, Ford that you see everywhere.(no offense guys)

Its really a shame you have an issue with KM's. I have a red 94' VW Golf GTI for sale with exhaust, chip and just got water pump fixed. runs great no rust, manual trans. but now I have an MKIV. 200 something thousand KM's but its still a really nice car. If you change your mind shoot me a PM. It will be on the forums soon. Price was in your range. Anyways, Good luck finding a car. :)

A little different approach, have a look at 4th gen maxima (95-99?)
They're not as sporty as the cars suggested, but they're amazing car. Especially when they have such great depreciation, you can get one for around your budget. I have one right now, and have to say its probally the best car i've own, and it drives better than alot of newer cars. Handles great, lots of power, and awsome interior.
