We have the VIN, I want to make sure the car was not in any accidents. We also need to check if there are any leans on the car. What is the best way to check this?

You can go to the local registry to do a lien check.

However, the lien is not always registered right away and there may be one that hasnt shown up yet. (Had this experience)

registry should also be able to give you a carfax report with the VIN. I think it costs ~$25.

The problem with carfax is that they can only give you details on what was reported to them. If the accident was fixed "under the table" than carfax won't know about it.

It is best to just get it inspected.

Then take the car to a mechanic and bodyshop to check the car over. It's 10000000000000000x more accurate than carfax, which is fairly useless.

The only good thing about carfax is that if u see an accident on the report, run haha.

What check (what did it tell you) did you do at the registry and how much was it?

If I were to guess, he got the lien check from the registry.

If a car was a salvage, this means it has to have passed a technical\mechanical inspection and be road worthy right?

Yes, but we all know how many "wink wiink" mechanic/inspection passers there are out there...
