Story:

So as some of you know my car has been up for sale for a little while now.

I had a guy by the name of "Jaden Walker" call me and wanted to see the car. I met up with him he liked the car told me it was sold. So after Fuc***g around for a couple of days. He calls me and says he has the money and would like to pay me $12,000. I agreed on the price and went meet him to give him the car. He gave me a certified cheque for what I thought was $12000.

I have never seen a certified cheque before so all I new to look for was a bank stamp, a embossed lettering and holes punched through the numbers on the bottom.

The cheque had all these things. So I took it and gave him the car. With all paperwork. I have a copy of the bill of sale. So does he. He also has my Registration ( the one you sign the back of.)

Anyways. It turns out this Fag went to the bank got a certified cheque for $10. Then he erased everything on it and made it out for $12000.

So now what should I do.

If anyone sees the car around please let me know ASAP. A license plate # would really help me out. Or if anyone knows this goof please let me know.

95% Sure this is him!

Calling the police would probably be a good start.

Sorry to hear what happened. That sucks. So did he create a bank account with a fake i.d. etc?

I'd sue, or tell the cops. It is theft over $5000 and fraud, pretty serious, if they know him he can be arrested and they can match the writing on the cheque to his hand.

I'll keep an eye out for the car.

Do you have a copy of the vin number on an old insurance card?
You could take it in to the police and tell them the story. they can go to the registry and see if its been registered. Dont be a vigilante. Tell the cops and be a pest so that they dont put it on the back burner. it shouldn't be hard to catch this prick. did you have a phone number or any other info of this dude?

Fuck that sucks big time. We've come across so many cases with similar scenarios, that end up going to courts and adding up tons of money for long ass litigations.

First thing you should do is inform the police, I am sure you have already? If not you should right away. Chances are, he might have already forwarded the car to another unaware 3rd party purchaser, so there will be a clash of interests between you two if that's the case. He might have already disappeared from the town or whatever.

I have gone to the cops. They told me to call the fraud dept. I left a message with them.

He saw the car on Canada Trader.

So far I have been told by the police it is usually very hard to do anything about it. and I'm out the money.

I hope this kid dies crashing the car.

:werd:

Do you have any of the numbers he called you from. Do you remember the type of car he came in when he met with you?

I could be wrong, but I thought in order to give you a certified check, one would need an bank account. So even if he edited the amount it is worth, the check itself should be linked to a bank account. If he's not that stupid and it leads to a fake bank account, the bank should still be able to view the time of the transaction when he got his $10 check, and possibly video of him in the bank at that time.

This is the 2nd story I've read on Beyond about a seller getting fooled by a fake certified check. I remember some poor guy got fleeced out of a pretty nicely done up MX-3 a little while ago.

speaking of such an incident, what would be the best method to deal with selling ones car in order to avoid things like this from happening again?

I normally goto a bank and make sure the money is deposited into the account along with the buyer of course

and reporting the vin as stolen would be your best bet at this point.

Thats what I did when I bought my car from a beyonder, as I ALSO wanted to make sure the money went threw to him.

To the OP, really sorry to hear that, I would go ballistic over something like this, I'll be sure to keep an eye out for it, but my guess would be it would end up in a chop shop.

Next time I sell a car I'll make sure to do the transaction at the bank.

I think outside of actual cash everything else would need to cleared first before the goods are handed over. Like paying something on eBay. Nothing is even shipped to you until your cheque is cleared by he bank.

Actually I have some good news for me. The car he showed up in was a Limo. I remembered the driver calling me for directions.

I called him up and had a good chat with him.

His name is REAL.
He stole his Dads credit card to pay for the limo.
The address he was dropped off at was
#54 Aloha Trailer Park. Olds AB.
I also got the name of a RCMP Officer that may know the
dumbass who took the car.

This should help me out alot.

Also he owes the limo driver $300

I forgot to give him the spare keyfob for the alarm. If your buddy wants to be a little daring. I could give him the alarm control and he could take out the E-manage from under the pass seat. Then the car won't even turn over. I doubt that he would ever figure out why.

what a retard....steals his dads credit card to rent a fucking limo??? why would you take a limo from olds to calgary to "steal" someones ride, and then when he does get the car, he just takes it to olds and leaves it in a trailer park wtf?

it sure seems like this guys brain functions properly. if he's
"smart" enough to do this whole certified cheque scam, wouldn't he have some sort of plan? sounds like a total trailer trash tard that needs his balls slowly blowtorched. i've never read anything like this but it sure is remarkable how ppl think they can just get away with stuff like this.

glad to hear that the cops are doing something about it. honestly i would've been stupid and driven to olds to crack a skull but obviously not a smart idea.

I sure as hell thought about going to olds with a couple car loads of people to get the car back and give him what's coming to him. If I saw him within the first hour or so after I got the bad news from the bank, I think I would be the one with some legal problems lol.

As far as the car goes. I hope it comes back in the same condition as it left here. Or I hope he gets it written off. I don't want to deal with him in court to get repair bills paid for.

On another note here is a little bit of an update from the police side of things.

UPDATE:

An RCMP officer from the Olds detachment called me this morning saying he saw the car last night but didn't think much of it at the time. He found out about the situation this morning. When I talked to him apparently he has had a couple of run in's with pussnuts in the past. I told him that I went to the registries this morning to let them know that the VIN is for a stolen vehicle. At that time the registry told me that it has not yet been registered and probably has no insurance either. So the RCMP if they see the car now will pull him over for a check and if and when he has no insurance or registration. They will impound the car and give him a nice size fine around $2500 to $3000.

I'm sure glad I never took the drive to Olds. I don't think it would have worked out as well.

I have no idea if he will get arrested on the spot or not. I hope he does. It's a pretty complicated set of charges and a completely different aproach than if he just put a gun to my head and took it.

yeah who knows how the rc's will handle it
but...if they know the situation, im pretty sure he will get arrested. bank fraud isn't really a good thing lol...i think they take that charge fairly seriously....
driving a stolen vehicle, no ins, no reg im sure he will be spending the night with the sweet smell of urine and vomit

Roughly how old was this guy? I hope he's not a minor...

Haha and I wonder what the limo driver was thinking picking up a kid from a trailer park... hahaha I bet he's kicking himself now that he's out $300 for the limo ride. What was he expecting though?
