I'm thinking about buying a Bike. I'm considering the Trek Session 77.

Thoughts?

Rear Shock: Manitou Swinger 4-way coil w/preload, No-Tools SPV, SPV volume, rebound
Wheels: Bontrager King Earl
Crank: Bontrager King Earl 22/32 w/bash guard
Rear Derailleur: SRAM X-0
Sizes: 15.5, 17.5, 19.5"

^ nice. How much is that setting you back? What kind of riding do you do?

I was looking at a new hardtail (specialized) and took an interest in this thread.

IMO giant/norco are far better bikes than trek, you may want to consider those. Specialized is worth considering somewhere in there as well.

Trek :thumbsdow but everyone has their preference I suppose.

Its on sale right now for $3500.00

Another bike I'm considering is a Santa Cruz Bullit.

Roughly the same price in stock form.

I want a downhill bike only. What models are you suggesting?

I would go for the Santa Cruz. There stuff has so much craftsmanship. I also like the burliness of the pivots and bearings - it might be easier to service (if you do your own wrenching). The Trek is sweet too though.

If it matters, I think both are made in N. America. Pretty sure the others are made in Taiwan.

Have you ridden both? See if you can get a loaner for a day or two of testing. Are you doing lots of N. Shore style riding?

If you are going to buy from Bow (Santa Cruz) let me know. I have friends there and they always take awesome care of my family and friends.

I've ridden the bullit and love it, but I've heard excellent things about the Trek. Especially the rear suspension setup which in reality makes more sense (independent from the front.)

I'm strictly downhill...drops...tables...jumps...rough down hill stuff.

I literally JUST went through this process. How much do you want to spend?

If you want to go downhill only I would suggest a triple crown fork rather than a single crown.

I found the Norco A-line to be the best bang for the buck if you're buying new, at about $3500 after tax. If they still have it, bow cycle had an A-line the accidently put Jucy 7 brakes on instead of the 5's and it's the same price. The A-line uses previous year norco team DH frames I believe. It was between that and the specialized big hit 3, and the norco was considerably better equipped for the same money.

What I ended up doing was finding an awesome used bike that the owner did not use anymore due to injury/getting married. It was in essentially mint condition. It's a 2004 GIANT DH Comp used for less than 1 season. I paid $2500 and it had all the goodies on it including Marzocchi 888 forks, Manitou Swinger 6 rear shock w/ TI spring, Jucy 7 brakes, and apparently a bunch of other sweet stuff I am still learning about lol.

Used bikes depreciate like Cadillacs, you just need to make sure its a good sample. I happen to be really good friends with a bike tek so that saved me a couple grand.

Oh, also go buy a pair of those shorts that has the chode padding. You will thank me after your first ride haha.

I find you pay an unnecessary premium for Santa Cruz, INTENSE, YETI, etc. etc. Their wicked bikes but cheaper bikes are made just as well IMO.

Ride both bikes before you make the decision.

Trek and Santa Cruz both make excellent quality bikes. However from a service standpoint, I've heard that Santa Cruz is a real pain to deal with should you have any warranty problems down the road. I've never heard of anybody who has problems dealing with Trek after sales service.

A-line is great, A-line park edition is greater!

btw - I totally forgot about santa cruz, those frames are absolutely THE shit, they've got the geometry down to a science and you can't possibly go wrong with one! Santa Cruz

Just make sure the linkage is burley enough. I always had linkage based designs and the maintenance, noise and play all drove me back to a hardtail!

I would probably get a single pivot if I went FS again, but now I am too much of a retro grouch.

The Bullit is a wicked bike. My buddy has one and no complaints from him.

I ride a Specialized DH bike and it's been solid for as long as i've had it.

The trek looks like a Kona with that swingarm setup...

If you want a downhill bike, that trek is no good. Downhill bikes need to be beefy, and something with a triple crown shock. It was noted above the Norco A-line, which is nice. Norco's downhill bikes are pretty good, I ride a Norco Atomik. The Atomik is an awesome bike for the price, seeing how it comes with Marzocchi Super T's, and 7" in the back. Its the lower end downhill bike for Norco, but if you are just getting into it, the Atomik will do you fine.

When you said you just wanna do tables, drops, and shit what height of drops are you looking at? If it is nothing serious and you like the jumping more, you might want to look more towards a dirt jumper bike. Something with Marzocchi Dirt Jumpers, probably my favourite set of dirt jumper shocks. I only say this cause if you want to go off of alot of jumps, dirt jumps, etc. you want a shock that will compress before you go off, but not go back up until you have launched into the air. If you are looking into the huge drops, and the massive DH courses, and that will be your main riding, go for a downhill bike.

If you can find one the best DH/cross over bike EVER made was a Balfa 2stepDH honneslt best bike I ever rode.

I am STILL kicking myself for selling it.

I like smaller brands... Draco I had a Draco frame it was industructable.

As well as thunk... But CC doesnt make thunk anymore :'(

For all around I had ridden a friends bullet for a season and I hated it. I am a fan of multiple linkage.

I am partial to specialized for cookie cutter bikes... mainly because they pioneered the linkage that norco uses.

So I picked up a bike yesterday. Ended up going with a Devinci Frantic upgrading to a Totem Rock Shock, Fox Air rear shock & Avid Code 4 piston brakes.

Congrats on the purchase! Hopefully it all works out for you!

We should get a Beyond Downhill / Free ride shuttle or two together and head to Moose Mtn or anywhere people agree on and do some riding and photos.

This is the last bike I built. An 05 Stinky Frame with upgraded, fork, tires, stem, cranks, and bottom bracket. I love it for the decreased amount of riding I have done this year.

Sick bike. I stayed away from triple crowns for the same reason. That, and turning and slow speeds.

DeVinci kicks ass, I've owned more than my fair share of them and not one of them has let me down (though the 02-04 Chilipeppers were all pieces of shit IMO, had to fix them ALL the time)
