View Full Version : SAIT's Firewall

Alright, I search this topic but it turned into flaming in that thread.

I need to run some software from SAIT but the firewall won't let me. I have large 2 hour breaks and its not worth going home for that short of a time period.

Does anyone know of a tunneling software or something else that I could use? I'm not familiar with doing this so any help would be great.

Thanks.

I have a linux server running at home with SSH running

I use putty at school to ssh my linux server and I tunnel sockscap to proxy the connection of certain software/games.

I mainly tunnel RDC to control my vista pc at home to manage my downloads though. but I tried WoW last year

Does anyone know if Hamachi works at sait? I would recommend that to use to tunnel to PC's at home, etc.

iirc Hamachi's port is blocked

ssh is secure shell which allows you an encrypted connection to any host/servers on the net by using port 22 which is open at sait.

sockscap is where you will be running all your programs that require open net as it forwards all your network calls to your home pc.

or program doesn't juss have to be a game - like say for example you wnat to play WoW you use socks caps to open the game. instead of normally juss clickin WoW on the desktop

TECHNOLOGISTS You are not an engineer... As stated you can tunnel through SSH pretty much anything making any firewall moot.

Ok, so I downloaded Sockscap (Thanks GQBalla)

And now I am basically here:

http://soft.softoogle.com/scr/screen.php?id=5157

So the SOCKS server needs to be my IP address and the Port needs to be 20?

Should I set this up on my home computer or my laptop? Or both...haha.

Thanks for all the help.

GQBalla

you want port 22 -

also i would dl cywgin - follow the instructions

basically what your doing is creating a tunnel using port 22, so youll have to open that in your router -

i would statically assign an ip to your home computer.

youll also need your actual ip address go to like whatsmyip.com or something.

so when you create a tunnel using ssh youll remotely connect to your home pc. so username and password. and than run socks cap

heres a guide to install cygwin with SSH on your home pc
http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html

dont forget to port forward port 22 on your router to your pc that will run cygwin ssh.

Great.

In those instructions, step 2b...

"Choose a download site that is "close" to you.
When a selection screen comes up (you can resize the windows to see better),"

I get this window:

http://img249.imageshack.us/img249/3369/cygwin1eo5.png

Then this once I hit next, I get this...

http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/1567/cygwin2er9.png

What 'site' am I supposed to use in the second window?

Go back and select direct connection... I test-installed it on my laptop... i got it all installed, but didn't configure anything... I'm looking a little further into it as I don't know if it has directions on how to use Sockcaps

canmore go buy a cheap pc, even a Pentium 1 will do and install a linux server, install SSH and just leave it running.

thats what I have in my room running at home plus my vista PC which I remotely connect to

LilDrunkenSmurf
09-06-2007, 01:14 PM
I have mine set up finally, but I have nothing to test it with.

Okay, this SOCKScap program is frustrating the hell out of me, I can't figure out how to get it to tunnel with the ssh

LilDrunkenSmurf

Alright, so the ssh works FINE, but I'm not sure how to configure my SOCKScap program to get it to work right... any tips/hints?

ok on SSH under Tunnels add port 1080 Dynamic on the Forwarded port.
it will look like
D1080

now under SocksCap Settings:
SOCKS Server: 127.0.0.1 Port 1080
SOCKS Version 5
Resolve all names locally

once that's setup. just click New and add any programs (.exe) that you want to tunnel. ie. firefox.exe, WoW.exe etc.

what will happen then is that
program --> home pc --> internet

LilDrunkenSmurf
09-06-2007, 06:33 PM
I did it a different way.. similar... I used putty to resolve it, i'm not sure how to do it under ssh... I should pay more attention in my operating systems class... how would you do it your way? would it require one less program?

cityhunter2501
09-06-2007, 06:47 PM
oops haha.
I use putty aswell, Tunnels tab is in there.

basically all I have in my laptop is putty and SOCKSCAP

I run putty first, successfully SSH to my ubuntu server then run SOCKScap

btw I recommend dyndns to get a static hostname.
so that instead of remembering my home IP, I just type in my hostname like cityhunter2501.homelinux.com

LilDrunkenSmurf
09-06-2007, 07:10 PM
Awesome, thanks alot. Got it all set up... DYNDNS confuses me a little, but it's still working after I got it set up, so hopefully it stays that way. only question on it, what did you put as TTL? 60s or 4 hours?

cityhunter2501
09-06-2007, 07:22 PM
I have no idea where's that so what ever is default

Hmmm so could I use this program to open a connection to my home and then use it to surf the internet? Would I be remotely using my computer? I think this way I could avoid the company traffic spy thing that checks how much time I spend in Internet Explorer (all they do is look at a traffic log for websites visited)

LilDrunkenSmurf
09-08-2007, 01:31 AM
You'll still be using IE, you won't just be remotely using your home computer... So they'll basically see you have IE open, but won't know where your going. If my understanding of this is right.

pretty much its a proxy connection.
company will only be seeing you connected to your home, but can't tell what you've been visiting

If you leave your computer at home on, just use remote desktop to do stuff from it.. (Everything cept 3d / games will work fine).

Thats what I was originally doing. They delay is way too slow and the reaction time is off by seconds. (Clicking a button, it takes forever to actually 'click')
