So im just wondering.

how much are iPhones actually in stores in USA? and are they incredibly hard to find right now?

reason for my question is that my auntie is comin up to calgary from san diego and if i could get her to bring me up an iPhone and than i get it unlocked how much will it be, or should i juss look for a iPhone on eBay?

Uh...iPhones are INCREDIBLY hard to unlock. In fact, one kid in the US just unlocked one last week, after months of doing so while collaborating with guys online. It's believed to be the first (and only at this time) unlocked iPhone.

In fact, it was such a big deal that he managed to unlock it that he was able to trade it for a 350Z.

So in other words...no iPhone in Canada anytime soon.

It was hard to learn how to unlock them. Took them months to figure out.

However the instructions as to how to unlock the phone are online and apparently it only takes about 12 hours of work to get a phone unlocked.

First time I've seen the actual price plans from AT&T...

$59 US for 450 anytime min, 200 text, unlimited data/email, 5000 evenings, rollover, and unlimited mobile to mobile...

The U.S. has so many options for wireless and it's easy to find a carrier with unlimited everything for anywhere between $30-50/month. We really need more competition to see these kinds of plans :thumbsdow

To unlock the iPhone you have to actually take it apart and use a soddering iron if I remeber correctly from the news story about that kid that was the first to unlock the iPhone. He then traded his unlocked iphone for a new Nissan car and a new iPhone. I'll just wait until it comes to Canada, if ever. :guns:

I brought an Iphone up from the states about a onth ago now, the Hardware unlock that is available out there now only takes about 25 min to do and is free, you just need to partially dissasemble the phone and steady hand with some needles.

I'm currently running it on the rogers network, with absolutely no problems I even connected to the local EDGE network, but dare not use it as they would be billing me per the kb

I paid 650 after taxes and what not in texas for my phone, didnt even have to wait in line or anything, they had them in stock and ready to go.

apple will not send a iPhone to a Canadian adress so you either have to buy one from ebay or head down to the USA to pick one up yourself.

Also only the Cingular/AT&T Corporate stores carry the phone, and you can walk in and just buy one with out siging a contract or anything, they just asked for my email adress and that was it.

I'm thinking of doing a group buy of iphones for beyonders, I may or may not be heading down to texas again, of course there would be a premium on bringin them over, and a small fee for the unlocking service.

at frist I didnt hink the phone was worth it, I thought there were not going to be any thrid party apps for it, but now after having it for a while I can say its worth every penny. The Iphone basically runs OS-X, the only thing that gets to me is that the browser doesn't support flash, but Apple is working on getting that resolved

Im leaving Saturday.. I wouldnt mind grabbing a couple for some people but my only concern is crossing the border with like 10 iPhones hahaha. Going there, and then shipping it to your house would be an option.

is the software unlock out of question or is it gonna happen soon at least?

I want to unlock mine but software unlock would seem safer than what the tutorial shows.

You can just as easily fry the chip with software as you can hardware.

Software means you don't have to crack the case hence void the warranty. But you are in Canada anyway, warranty is pointless.

I just bought an iphone from At&t and love it! The phone cost $499 for the 4GB and $599 for the 8GB, and minimum monthly charge of $59.99. The only real problem with it is the battery life is rather short if you keep the wireless internet on constantly.

yeah any GSM network with any V2 or V3 sim card the only thing that doesn't work for us here in canada is the Visual voice mail, other than that the iPod, Wifi, Browser, Phone, Stocks, Weather, google maps and you tube work on the rogers network

I am in calgary all the time, taking the phone apart is what take the longest time after that its a few scripted command and presto!
and no i wouldnt be providing any sort of warranty and would advise anyone that is looking to have this done is doing so at thier ownrisk, most people who have taken this route have suffered case damage as in small dents and scratches, that rear case in on thier pretty tight. I can only tell you guys that i would be doing my best to make sure your handsets com out pristine

my brother just confirmed last night that there are 4gb and 8gb iphone at Apple store in BELLEVUE SQUARE , Seatle about 7 mins from his house and you can buy them over the counter right away at $499 for 4GB and $599 for 8GB as he called the Apple store at 8:00 PM last night. The store said the shortage of iphone only happen when they first put iphone onsale and now they have stock in their hand and not really anyone buying the iphone. Also check EBAY I saw atleast 8 auctions around my brother area and I msged them all and 5 of them agree to sell me the brandnew in the box 8gb iphone for US $600 shipped to my brother place or he can come to pick it up himself since they are less than 50 miles from his place. That is a save of 8% TAX in Seatle if you buy from Apple store that will compensate for the shipping charge to Calgary, and you can get it unlock for $30-$50 and voila you own an iphone. I just bought a 8gb iphone for my wife this way last night and get my brother to pick it up and mail it to me today with overnight courrier from his BOEING office. The total come out to around canadian $650 for the iphone + another $50 for shipping it here and unlock it, so my wife can have the iphone at $700 :D, so do not fall for jack-up price that people asking for an iphone as I seen canadian $900+ for a unlocked 8GB iphone...:dunno:

Not everyone has a brother that will do this for them. $200 isn't unreasonable to get an iphone for the effort that your brother went through.

I was currently playing with an iPhone the other day while at the applestore in costa mesa and I must say that it is really an amazing device. Now reading this thread I am 50/50 about picking one up. I would rather do a software hack to unlock the phone as opposed to a the hardware hack. Will there be a software hack released soon? Or should I wait till Christmas (I'm always in the states) and get one then? Perhaps a new iPhone version will be out by that time :dunno:
