I play in Hockey North America (http://www.hna.com). I'm going into my 4th year in the league, and I like it quite a bit. There's a protected skate coming up on the 16th which you need to pass to play. It's not a try-out so much as a qualifier to make sure which division you'd belong in. They try and keep the same skill level together so that everyone has fun.

how does this league work? i was looking through the website but was having trouble finding information.

do individuals go to this open skate and then put on teams with similar skill levels?

Ok, it was a few years ago that I did it, but I'll try and remember.

There 2 skates - a protected, and an open. It sounds like the open skate is what you are looking for, which is when you have no specific team in mind, you just want to play. (looks like it's Sept 17th, schedule here: http://www.hna.com/leagues/calendar.cfm?leagueID=5757&clientID=2296). You basically try and guess which skill level you'll fit, and then teams watch you and pick you to fill their empty roster spots. If you're too good for the division, other teams will veto the pick, and you'll get moved up to the next skate where the process repeats.

Actually, now that I'm looking at the website, it might be too late to register for this year in Calgary. This page (http://www.hna.com/leagues/pick_league.cfm?clientid=2296&leagueid=0) is where you'd register, and there's no "register" button anymore. It still seems early though ....

I'll tell you what: If you're serious about playing, fire me a PM and I'll check with my team captain and see if he can get me the contact for someone who can explain things to you and maybe get you into these skates. If you miss the open skate, you can't play this year.

That's fine. I don't think I have the time or money to play this year anyways. I was just curious as to how it worked. Thanks
