View Full Version : 4X4 as opposed to 4X2?

What advantages does a 4X4 really offer?
I mean lets face it,if a person basically uses it to get around in and likes the idea of having a pickup truck for the obvious use of the dump...where does the 4x4 part come in if you never go off road?
Besides that they use a bit more gas as well...
And they are more expensive to purchase in the first place!

Just looking for some constructive comments...

IMO, it's cooler having a 4x4, you are higher than everyone else, you feel like you own the road. A lot of 2WD's are work trucks and a small population are owned by people who don't want 4WD. Face it, we are in Alberta the 4x4 truck capital! Heck I have two 4x4's:D

4x4 is much better in bad weather conditions, especially for pickups when they aren't loaded. They're fun in 2WD though. Is 4WD better for towing?

U can run 4x4 high in the winter, it would help against slippage on ice. Plus, think if you ever hit the ditch, 4x4 could save your life in a blizzard, could be the only thing that gets you out.

4x4=handy.

I had a 4X2 work truck and we actually had to sell them all for 4X4 because the 4x2 Chev's sucked in the snow/dirt conditions when tracing Transmission lines and that.

And we are in the Okanagan

no, 2wd is better for towing...more power to the ground, less weight and less stuff to break

However, I think 4wd is better for our climate/road conditions

Have you ever driven a 4 wheel drive vehicle in winter?? If you haven't, try it when its snowing hard...being able to pull away with authority on a hill after it has snowed 6 inches is simply awesome.

I'm not trying to cause a ruckus...just looking for opinions...
however for the few times it snows enuf to justify a 4X4 it's don't add up to the loss of mileage and the extra cost of the vehicle not to mention the possible higher maintenance costs!

I need 4x4 to pull a loaded trailer in winter. If you live in a hilly community you'll need it just to get home. I always see these sad 2wds trying to get up Hawkwood's hills.

4x4 could also help with resale

But except for a certain species taking their kids to soccer/hockey practice, thinking they're invincible in a 4 X 4 would be the ONLY REASON they get stuck in the snow.

If nothing else, resale will be WAY higher than a similar 2X4 truck.

And if they have the V6 vs a V8 (if there is a V8 option) they get pretty hard to sell too.

The difference in gas mileage isn't all that bad assuming you are driving in 2wd most of the time. I've owned both 2wd and 4wd trucks and I will always go 4wd. You don't need it all that often but it's damn handy when you do.

Having grown up on a farm I would never buy anything but a 4x4... 2 wheel drive trucks are all but useless in any amount of snow or mud.. And you end up having to load some weight in the back to have any traction... And if you've had a 4x2 and then get a 4x4 I doubt you would go back... I can see it working down south where they dot get snow, and if they dont go off road theres no need, but for what I would use a truck for, 4x4 or bust..
