I have a 2.16 Macbook Pro that was plagued by the overzealous thermal paste problems that caused a large amount of heat buildup and subsequent slowdown. (http://www.tuaw.com/2006/05/04/macbook-pro-heat-problem-heats-up/ for information)
Yesterday I took my MBP apart and replaced all the thermal paste on the heatsinks and components and the thing is running much better.
I have found this link http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro/Fans/85/8/
it walks you through how to take everything apart until you get to the fans (which you don't need to worry about taking off, also you do not need to worry about the right speaker (in the instructions it says to turn it and remove it) you can just remove the MOBO overtop of it.
I reapplied the thermal paste and noticed a 15 degree drop at idle.
