I'm sure any aquarium animal will stink if you don't clean the tank regularly.

Turtles dont stink, the thing is turtles dont shed in one big piece like a snake so if you dont have a proper turtle filter the tank would get full of floaties and start to stink, I have had him for almost a year and he has never stunk yet!

They are like any animal, if you don't clean it, it will start to smell...

Clean it regulary and all is well. :)

From what I've heard they're illegal to SELL (and likely import)... not illegal to own or give away like this guy's doing.

Man, EVERYTIME someone offers up a turtle for free (and they seem to pop up every few months), everyone asks the SAME questions. We should sticky a turtle FAQ or something.

To answer your questions:

1.) YES THEY STINK. dee_28 is probably just used to the smell. They poop like crazy and it gets all mixed up in their water and clogs the filter. Along with all the shell bits (the shell molts piece by piece) and all the dead skin that flakes off them. AGAIN, THEY STINK.

2.) YES, they require maintenance. Water needs to be changed every month or so, sooner if your filter sucks. Expect to shell out at least $100 for a good pump, and another $300 for a canister filter.

3.) You can feed them pellets ($3.99/100g at Pisces), and supplement with stuff like lettuce, feeder fish, frozen worms, shrimp, etc... Feeding needs to take place in a seperate tub. Feed them every other day.

4.) If you've never had turtles before, DO RESEARCH. Google for tons of info. Go to the library. Go to the pet store. If you're asking here, you obviously have no clue and are too lazy to do your own research, hence, probably too lazy to own a turtle.

5.) They need a fairly big tank, floating basking area, and heat lamp. They need a good filter, or the water will be stinky, cloudy, and full of algae within a few days.

6.) They are DIRTY and potentially harbour salmonella. Not good for young kids.

7.) If taken care of properly, they will probably live as long as you.

Otherwise, they are very entertaining and seem to have personalities.

Be careful, my gf had a red ear slider and everytime she would clean his tank, which was a half clean once every 3 days and a full water change every week, she would get sick because of the smell, as well as the salmonella the turtles naturally carry.

Used to own pet turtles when I was younger. They are nice pets. Easy maintenance. Couldn't find any little ones in Calgary though.

Good pets for the responsible person.
