What does everyone use?? I currently use Zonealarm full Suite, which IMO works really well. But I find it to be a bit of a resource hog and take forever to load.

I'd prefer an all-in-one suite, just something that runs a bit more lean.

Don't touch McAfee or Norton.

Period.

Avast for Antivirus if you want free, Kapernsky if you want to pay.

AVG is crap it doesn't catch most modern trojans or dropper files.

AOL is free and it is the Kapersky AV. You just need some antispyware. (make sure you have at least two.

Buy Panda, Kapersky, or PCcillin if you want a whole suite. Each has its own advantages my personal preference is Panda Antivirus. It scans email slower than the others but has nearly a 100% detection rate with spyware. PCcillin scans fast and has a very nice phishing and web filter controls but is is a resource HOG. Kapersky has the best AV on the market next to Nod but I found it's spyware scanning weak and it the full featured suite is missing some features the others have .

I was using avast until this happened to me:

The virus changed the avast files on reboot. Subsequently had to format my computer.

mcaffee, from my experience is much less on resource than Norton. Or get a mac, not saying that mac are immuned, but much less spyware. Shitty thing about mac is there is barely any virus, spyware, so most people don't have AV, so if there's a virus in ur system u wouldn't even know.

Granted the last I used it was a couple of years ago but compared to other free software out there it is sub par.

This is probably the best free-ware AV comparo on the web right now.
http://wiki.castlecops.com/AntiVirus_Comparison

Avtivir caught 10086 viruses
AVG caught 9507 viruses

That means AVG is missing 579 viruses.

allroc,

Works for me. I just unintalled AVG, and installed a trial of Kaspersky.. it got 2 things on it's initial system scan...

I'm also testing it on an older laptop, to see how bad it impacts performance. The box used to have norton on it, and it was almost unusable.. with a constant cpu usage that was around 15%.. so far, so good with Kaspersky.

Thanks for the heads up. I wouldn't have looked if you hadn't pointed it out.

Kapersky isn't as light on resources as AVG but it is one of the better one's.

I trialed PCcillin on the desktop and it worked great - still use it. I have some young nieces and nephews that come over on the weekends and use the computer and the parental filter is not bad. However, I bought multiple copies without checking it on the laptop and holy crap - laptop ground to a halt. I Use the AOL free, and spybot + adaware + microsoft defender to find spyware now on the laptop.

My favorite is Panda but my wife always complained when she had emails coming in .. it scans emails really really slowly - but I trusted it's spyware and AV protection fully and it was otherwise fairly light on resources, just a bit more than kapersky.

Search up a thread, I made on awhile ago about the same issue.

I eventually went with Kaspersky 6.0. Found all the crap Norton didn't and haven't had an issue since. Runs way faster as well.

Adding 1 or 2 extra spyware programs helps as well I'm finding.
