If you plan to use a phone in Europe, South America, Asia, etc, you need a worldwide GSM phone. 900/1800/1900 are the most common different worldwide frequencies for GSM.

To have an overseas phone work it has to run GSM 900/1800/1900. They are triband and world phones. CDMA phones from Japan and Korea will not work as their CDMA technolgy is the newest generation where North America's is the old generation.

Make sure the GSM phone is unlocked. It's better cause all you have to do is insert the sim card. If it's not unlocked you can always find someone to unlock it but that's a hassle. There are lots of phones that you can buy overseas that work here. Just look them up on Cnetasia. There's lots of nokias, Sony-Ericcsons around that will work.
