In this day and age of Americans considering smaller and lighter vehicles than ever before, a new report from USA Today suggests that the machines themselves might not be up to the challenge of transporting our ever larger bodies.
As one consequence of the Firestone tire debacle in 2000, automotive manufacturers have been required to designate maximum weight capacities (including both passengers and cargo) on all 2006 or newer model vehicles. These limits, printed on the driver’s side door frame, seem almost dangerously small in certain cases.

Happy owners of the world’s most popular convertible, the Mazda MX-5, (nee Miata) might be surprised to learn that car’s total capacity is only 340 pounds. At a mere 170 pounds per occupant, with nothing else on board, it would seem that many (most?) Americans are pushing the limits of the Mazda every time they go for a spin. Honda’s S2000 is nearly as bad, affording a mere 400 pounds of capacity.
While manufacturers claim that limits are intentionally low and that a margin of safety is engineered into every vehicle, there is no mandate for an automaker to disclose where the real limits lie. With the weight of the average U.S. citizen still on the rise, knowing the exact point at which a vehicle becomes unsafe would seem paramount.

Are manufacturers doing enough to inform their customers about a vehicle’s dynamic limits? Have your say in ‘Comments’.

So while you can't drive your car cause your too fat, walk everywhere to lose the weight!

At first glance, it looks stupid to only have 340 lbs for a car, looking at people who are tall and naturally heavy... but then once you think about it, anyone who's that tall probably can't fit in there anyways.

But your motorcycle which probably has a few ponies less than a MX-5 doesn't have to carry a 3000lb frame and body.

Just for giggles:

Why are they asking for the actual failure limit of the car? That's the whole point of a safety factor. Sure the weight limits on the door seem low but people will exceed them anyways the way people exceed speed limits. If it listed the actual failure point I'm sure people would still try to exceed it thinking they're smarter than the people who engineered it.

By listing it, manufacturers are avoiding lawsuits. If you put 2 200lb guys in a Miata and crash, Mazda has no liability at all.

It's not about people trying to exceed the limit. It's when they do and shit happens, manufacturers can just walk away.

Huge people would look out of place in a car like that anyway. Big people should drive big cars. End of story.

I find that pretty lame. At 6'7 and 220 lbs I'm described by everyone as skinny. The weight just comes with being as tall as I am.

I hate trucks and SUV's. I don't like big cars. If I could somehow fit, I'd be driving an Exige as soon as I got the money. I don't think I should be relegated to a big car because of my genetics. Screw that.

Do you find something comical about my appearance when I'm driving my automobile?

Everyone needs to drive a vehicle, even the very tall. This was the largest auto that I could afford. Am I therefore to be made the subject of fun?

You should not have eaten so much when you were a kid. Maybe then, you wouldn't have grown so much.

You should have stepped away from the food then!

Lose weight, feel great. Drive a small car!

hahaha, just kidding of course.

QFT. If I would have eaten less, my parents would have had more money, which would have meant my parents could have afforded a cooler car that I would have borrowed more when I was 17 and therefore would have gotten better looking chicks and more action from them.

Eating lots ruined the best years of my life.

I don't fit in any car. It's brutal. I have to splay my knees on either side of the wheel and getting at the brake is always a little trick for me in any car (safe... I know). The seat is all the way back, all the way down and tilted back a bit too. I wish we had telescopic wheels, because mine is really far away from me.
