alright so just got a brand new laptop, its a HP pavilion dv2410ca

now it comes with all of the wireless shit like blue tooth and a built in broadcom wireless card

now when i first used it yeasterday it was working lightning fast but now after installing all of the updates and thinks it is running almost as slow as dial up

so i was wondering if it was just shaw being stupid again or my computer, so i hooked up a eithernet cable to it from the hub and it worked great so is there some kind of settings that i can change to get the wireless working just as fast again?

for example, for the same download the hard line is at 700kb/s and the wireless is at 24kb/s

also in the wireless network connection status it says that IPv4 conectivity is internet and IPv6 is limited, does that have anything to do with my problem?

do you think its the wireless hub or the computer? my brother uses the wireless too and hasnt said anything about it being super slow so im thinking its my computer

:dunno:

and also i couldnt even download itunes using the wireless, it would take half an hour if it didnt keep stopping, and when i had the hard line it was 2min and it worked

i cant even watch youtube videos with the wireless, for a 1min vid to load it is about 5min

lol you just showed how "computer savy" you really are

ask your bro if hes running torrents cause that can murder your connection speed

Disable IPV6
Control panel>Network and sharing centre>(second line down Connection, click on view status)>properties>remove tick from IPV6

no he hasnt been home all day to run anything, but it is unprotected...

but if it was someone else stealling the signal why wouldnt the hard line be slow too?

oh and i know plenty about computers just more along the software side, not hardware/set up stuff

Did you install anything besides the windows updates? How much crapware are HP pc loaded with?

IPV6 has *nothing* to do with your problem... Disable it, enable it, it shouldn't make any more difference than blowing on your eternet cable...

You can always try disabling the windows firewall to see if that makes a difference. If it does fix the rules on the firewall and enable it again. Disable any antivirus firewall/internet security etc... Things like macfee, norton when misconfigured tend to cause this type of problem.

Secure your wireless ASAP, I know that most likely wont fix your issue but comeon it takes 2 mins and will keep you safe. I have a fun time connecting to the wireless of my neighbors, changing their SSID, printing tub girl 100 times to their home printers and putting a pw on their routers.

Also make sure your routers firmware is up to date, and you have the newest drivers for your wireless card.

What kind of signal strength are you getting?

Are you using the windows wireless connection utility or a shitty HP one?

What OS is on the notebook?

What antivirus software are you using?

It doesn't surprise me at all that you laptop wasn't up to date, thats what you get for buying it from Bestbuy, that thing was prolly sitting in a warehouse for a couple months and microsoft releases new updates every week. But it is very strange that updates would ruin your wireless connection.

yeah i got it from staples, went into get something to let me transfer my files from my busted laptop to my desktop and walked out with this thing

im also thinking that maybe it could be norton doing it but i dont know, its working ok right now but still not as fast as the hard line, or my old laptop that had a d-link air plus xtreme g dwl-g650 card in it, which by the way wont work in this one

do you know what updates did you install?
you might have installed an update for your wifi without knowing and thats whats causing problems.
if so you could try uninstall it, then download drivers for it?

ok so i opened the device manager and then clicked on newwork adapters and my broadcom 802.11b/g wlan is in there along with the bluetooth stuff and nvidia nforce networking controller, so nothing could be rolled back and the only thing that could be updated was the controller and so i did and it still dosent change anything :banghead: :banghead:

I had this same problem last night. I am also running windows Vista and I was downloading at 20-25kb/s. It was irritating, and my desktop was downloading at 400-500 kb/s from the same website. Took me like 20 minutes to download iTunes which is only like 50 mb. Tried the same file on my desktop and it took 1 minute...

On some laptops, the power savings mode can wreak havoc with wireless .. you could try checking your power options and selecting 'max performance' as the mode.

would this not only effect it if i was running off of the battery and not plugged into the wall?

Did you try rebooting all your equipment (pretty much unplugging the power from modem and router) and updating the router firmware?

too many times to count...

firm ware is still a mystery to me though, that will probably help though if it has something to do with vista since all the xp computers are working fine and my lone vista matchine is hit or miss

Norton blows anyways dude.. Just wipe it out.

Check your msconfig.exe and make sure there isn't a fuckload of programs ticked off in "startup" that are bogging you down / using the internet (most programs have an internet link for updates etc. they can slow you down.)

It isn't a firmware problem with your equipment as your non-vista computers are running fine, but your vista is running like balls, it's a problem with the vista computer.

Try disasbling/enabling the network card (device manager..) and your wifi card.

Powercycling everything wont do anything in this situation as again, it isn't an equipment problem, it's a PC problem.

Get your PC checked out at bestbuy, they should have something there that lets you bring it back within a set amount of time for repairs, some sort've "warranty" i think it's called.. Cus your wifi sucks balls.

Run a spyware check? I dunno I usually always do this when my computer or internet is acting a little sluggish:

Are you sure the driver for the wireless card is up to date? FYI, windows update doesn't give a crap about how old your drivers are, and will do nothing when a new driver is released.

Go check the hp website first, and then search for the drivers for the broadcom card, and see if it's newer, if not, search for driver by searching the exact name of the wireless card e.g. Broadcom BCM43XX and see if a newer version of the driver is available.

These drivers are know to contain fixes for all kinds of wireless problems, including dropping wireless connections, low transfer speeds, and security fixes.

oh, and IPv6 is out, it's just not commonly supported.
