In that case, I wouldn't even bother with winter tires man...I drove my civic with all seasons NO PROBLEM. Its a front wheel drive with like 130hp...you don't NEED winter tires at all. Rear-wheel drive is a different story.

An extra set of tires and wheels will probably cost you around 700 to 1000 bucks depending on the size and brand. It's up to you to decide if it's worth the money to have more traction both in summer and winter by having two sets of tires.

In my opinion, a minor fender bender can easily cost you more than 1000 bucks. Plus, the usual no-season tires that come with the car are not designed for winter condition in Calgary.

and driving all seasons all year will wear faster than 2 set of tires each 1/2 the year.

winter tires in winter, summer tires in summer.....when possible.

My dd is a fwd super slow celica so I run all seasons all year cause its a beater.....my other cars though...winters in winter.

Anybody can get moving and drive around on an all season tire, but if you ever need to pull an emergency stop or quick lane change to avoid an accident (usually the guy who is on all seasons) and you are on ice or snow, the winter tire will make all the difference in the world...

No matter what anyone tries to tell you, an all season tire is NOT made for ice and snow. there are more people in California than there is in Canada. They are not made with our conditions in mind... Yes they will give you a bit more traction when the temps are hovering close to zero and there is slushy goop on the road, but as soon as it gets cold and icy, the rubber goes hard like a hockey puck and they do not function any better than a quote unquote summer tire at that point.

What makes a winter tire function is mainly from the rubber compounding. The rubber in a winter tire stays soft and pliable when the temperatures drop, in turn allowing the tread design and the extra siping to function properly. An all season tire does not have this compounding or the tire would wear faster in the summer...

The very best all season is only maginally better than the worst all season (maybe 10% if even that) when it comes to severe winter conditions, but even the worst winter tire is enormously better than the best all season in those sme conditions... I don't care if you buy the cheapest wal mart tire known to makind... If it is a true winter tire you are far better off than on ANY all season...

You only need to use them once to know the difference, and it only has to save you once to pay for themselves over and over again...
