I put in a '12 subwoofer as an impulse buy sometime ago. I'm concerned it may be causing my gas mileage to suffer. Can someone please offer me an understanding as to how the woofer may be effecting the fuel mileage on my 850 Volvo?
Thank you for your time.

Agreed. Assuming that the box is of normal size and made of MDF the box, sub, amp, and wiring should be less than 150lbs. No more than having a passenger. The effects of the added weight should cause very little, if not no impact to your economy.

I look up fuel savings tips and it always say to get rid of extra weight. I don't know why they'd warn me if it didn't matter.

Dude it would not even make a differnce. Garanteed that your sub and box and amp does not even weigh 100 pounds.

Trust me its not the sub if your losing mileage.

ya your volve weighs alot, an extra 80 pounds is not going to do anything.

my 10 inch sub with box weighs like 30 lbs. i don't see how that will affect performance on a car that's 3000 lbs.

if anything it could be the music ur listening, fast agressive music will make drivers more agressive and there for worse gas mileage cause ur on the pedal more. the only other way it could hurt ur car would be if u had a really really weak electrical system and its pulling on that. and that would be a very extreme case.

yeah I had a very heavy setup compared to most and I never really notcied any difference, depending though it could tehnically add up depending on what system you are running. wheny ou are running a 300 amp alternator and then have roughly 250-300 extra lbs then it might affect it to the point of 1 mpg.

to run a standard 80 amp alternator it can draw as much as 5hp from an engine.

for a system i had 2 batteries, a 48 lb 12", a 4CF box built out of 1" MDF, double baffled, inside of box was coated in FG resin, 2/0 wiring, 2 gallons of second skin sludge and roughly 50-60 square feet of damplifier...

and with that I honestly never noticed a difference in my fuel consumption.
