hey guys i realize a similar topic is brewing right below this, but that one is focused on the younger kin.

I'm 23 and feel that I would like to do something more constructive with my time then what i do know.

i was thinking to learn a martial art!?

I'm looking for a martial art that requires and builds strength and stamina.

Boxing can be included.

any suggestions for some1 looking to begin??? personal experience would be awesome also.

Thank you,

try out a bunch of different styles and schools and pick the one that you like the most. Most schools will offer you a few free trial classes.

personally, i'm a fan of jiu jitsu/MMA

if you're in the south, there's the Hamon jiu jitsu club that trains out of the Family Leisure Center beside Southcenter mall.

I'd do some research on a few of the arts mentioned, find the ones that most suit yourself and interest you the most. Almost places will give you a week free trial to see if you like it. I would reccomend Wing chun, there is a very good academy in town ran by Sifu Lewandy.

Try Judo!

The Ishi Yama Judo club is one of the best clubs in Canada.

Colin Morgan is the head instructor now and is a two time Olympian.

I use to train and compete with him for years.

Its very physical and will whip you into shape in no time.

:werd: nothing like being able to toss someone around haha it works better than most people think... I attended Hap-Ki-Do and Korean Martial arts in Southland for 3yrs. It was a mix of Hap-Ki-Do, Tae Kwon do, Kum-sul-do, and Judo. Very good place to learn, Master parks is a crazy Korean dude (he'd woop my ass if he heard me refer to him like that haha)

but yeah the Judo was one of my favorite parts of it, u'd be surprised how well you can throw a guy twice ur size if you know how to.

Judu is fun

I was in Ishi Yama for many many of my childhood years.
Judo and Jiu Jistu are very similar ( Judo is derived from it)

Edit:
Is Paul still there.
He was a great Sensei I learned a lot from him.

Paul may show up once a year now, arthritis and a hip replacement will do that though.

When did you train there? I may know you.

Paul was my sensai as well.

It was Colin, Keith, myself and Andrew that were the top students at the time. Us four would travel over Canada and the US for competitions together.

Before Paul I trained under Yosh Senda who is the Olympic coach and head sensei for the Lethbridge Judo Club.

Very interested.

Do you know what they charge per month?

I was in Hap Ki Do under Master Wade Langin for a couple of years but he is now deep in the NW.

I trained there as a kid from about grade 2 to grade 10 or 11

I actually started before Paul took the club over at the South YMCA, it was originally taught by a blue belt, I can't remember his name but no one under him could be promoted past yellow. Then Paul took over and the club blossomed. If you see him tell him Brent D says hi. I was in high school with Brent R, The Isaacs, and one of the Sylvens - most of us wound up on the wrestling team - wonder why ;)

its pretty aggressive atmosphere all around from what I hear. The instruction is not as good as some other places with dedicated Kickboxing/BJJ/Wrestling coaches.

For the Juniors its $285/semester, 3 semesters. That doesn't include the cost of the Gi.

Its 3 days a week. Mon, Wed & Fri's for 2hr's per night.

The cost may be higher for Senior classes.
