My 98 540i as of lately has developed a "shimmy" when braking but only under aggresive braking and usually around 80-120km and sometimes higher speeds. Rotors and pads were all replaced within I year (cross drilled zimmermans). Anyone else experience this? I will likely replace the front rotors as a start-I just thought if they were warped you would feel that shimmy effect at slower speeds.... in addition I ruled out the obvious i.e. wheel balance and re-torqued lug nuts......Thanks

Thrust Arm bushings is the place to start for shimmy problems, they wear out over time and cause the very weak shimmy at the beginning but the more it wears, it will wear other suspension components out like mine did and then you have quite the shimmy on your hands.

I'm not sure for e39's but I know for e34/e32, the 750 bushings are the strongest so everyone who had to upgrade ebcause of shimmy could use 750 bushings which wouldn't wear out as fast

What wheels do u haveon the car? That will have ALOT to do with it too.The hub bore and centric ring need to be next to perfect. And the balance of the whole wheel. I just tore apart my whole E39's suspension to eliminate mine. Well I refreshed everything too new too.
Thrust arm bushing aren't always the case as with ALL E34s. Went through it on my old E34 too.

This seems to be a somewhat common problem for the e39, check out www.bimmerforums.com

Alright thanks guys I will have a look at my thrust arm bushings. As for my rims i believe they are a tight fit the are 19" brightons and seem to fit tight and they have all been balanced. Ill take a look a that bimmer forum too. Thanks for all your advice, ill reply back ant update you on what I find...
