So I have an older laptop that runs PC2700 memory.

Tigerdirect has this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3109429&CatId=150

which is PC 4200.

Can I run it in my laptop with another 512 module that is PC2700? Will there be conflicts?

It won't even support the 4200, it's DDR2 as opposed to 1 (new format)

Check that your laptop actually has a free slot. Some might already have been filled up from the factory. Usually very easy (should be just unscrew a cover underneath, but some compact ones have them underneath the keyboard).

But yes, you can run slower or faster RAM, but needs to be correct RAM (i.e. DDR1 vs. DDR2). If your RAM is slower than BUS, it'll just gimp it. If RAM is faster than BUS, it'll run at whatever it's supposed to run at normally. Ex: put pc2100 into a pc2700 system and it'll run at pc2100. Put in pc3200 into the same system and it'll run at pc2700.
