I'm about to buy an iphone tonight for a significant amount of money. I have been hearing rumours about it being useless if I update the software and what not. I was just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this to help all the impatient technology geeks.

If its already unlocked and you don't care about the updates, go for it. It's only a matter of time before someone will figure out how to unlock the updated firmware anyways.

if you ask me, its not worth owning an iphone right now simply because of the shitty data rate plans that we get here in Canada.
its only for the cool/baller factor that people buy an iphone.

once its around 400$ range then maybe its worth it

700 is way too much to be paying IMO for something that retails at 400 US. But if you don't have a way to get one directly from the states then I guess you gotta pay a premium for that. If you're cool with the price them I'd say go for it, had mine a few weeks now and love it.
The software update isn't absolutely necessary right now. You can live with the old firmware. Besides its just a matter of time before someone figures a way to update without re-locking the phone

anyone notice the price jump on ebay, since the newer ones come with 1.1.1 firmware, so cannot be unlocked?

4 gigs were goin for like close to 500 cuz they have the older firmware...

Currently, Iphones that have firmware 1.1.1 (whether it came stock or through an upgrade) cannot be fully unlocked. It is possible to downgrade the firmware to 1.0.2, but u cannot change the baseband modem. That means that u can use most of the Iphone's functionality, without phone/SMS features (essentially it becomes an expensive Ipod Touch).

Most people believe it is a matter of time before hackers figure out how to fully unlock a 1.1.1 Iphone. When that is, who knows?

if the seller has warranty, yes... if not, it's a waste of money

I'm going to bump this instead of making a new iphone thread.

Whats the best place to buy a new iphone now?
I dont know anyone down in the states, or going down soon so thats not an option. Only online via puremoblie for 600+20 ship or ebay for about 530 all together. Any suggestions....Im just worried about brokerage fees ect

avoid UPS brokerage fees by getting it shipped UPS express using AIR and all you have to pay is the GST on the value of the iphone, so if you can get the seller to put it as a refurbish cell phone and value $100 - $200 then you save some more on the GST...
