I thought this might be kind of a cool idea seeing as with this weather this past little while winter is just around the corner.

Maybe we can use this as a place to talk about snowboarding gear, videos, etc.

Also use this as a place to talk about where you went out boarding once the time comes, and how the conditions are etc.

I guess I can start off somewhat... any reccomendations for boots/bindings?
Replacing some older technine MFM's... So far I am leaning towards union bindings, and for boots, I have tried on burtons, thirtytwos and celsius so far, and the celsius were by far the most comfortable, and were cheaper than the burtons by a fair bit. They also had boa which seems like a conveniant feature.

I mostly ride all mountain/freeride ... and a little bit of park.

Yeah all the big sales are done until about February. You might be able to walk into a shop and find a board from last year at a good price, but it's slim pickings right now.

Looking forward to a better snow season this year hopefully. Took trips to Fernie and Panorama last year, both were really bad weekends for snow.

To the OP, I would stick with 32 or Burton boots, probably the 2 most comfortable boots out there IMO. I used to teach and a lot of the other instructors using 32's were having durability issues. Never had a problem with a Burton boot ever, going onto my 10th season using their boots this year. I haven't heard anything about, or tried the Celsius gear so I can't give you feedback there.

i have a shitty "trip" board with sims boots and bindings, but its time for some new stuff. 5 years ago when i got this shitty board it was because my brand new sims board got stolen from sunshine, the first time i used it. so next time im not spending ashitload on another board, which is why i have this one. do i see a Beyond snowboard meet in the future??

Firstly every one should check out is Source's new film
http://www.sandboxland.com/boxcover3.html

I boarded Sunshine and Louise early season, and took the sleds out to Revy were we did a week of back country. They also have a pretty sweet hill in the works that we were able to tear up one day. From there were headed back east and hit up Kicking Horse and Louise. We then headed down to Fernie and big White over new years for a week. Then me and the boys pretty much rode Louise Saturday and Sunshine Sunday every weekend till Apirl. My V.I.S.A bill at the end of the season for lift tickets alone was $2000.

For Binding I would really recommend toe caps, I wasn’t a believer till I actually rode my buds for a day and now I am. For Boots I recommend not penny pinching because at the end of the day it comes down to how much you care about your feet not hurting.

I think I'm gonna try out a ROME board this year before switching from my current Libtech, which I think is hands down the best board I have ever rode.

Oh ya for sure... My technines right now have the Baltimore straps... I bought them last season i think and they made a big difference, much better. I will definately be looking for toe caps or convertable toe straps.

Also, with my snowboarding gear I definately don't penny pinch. I don't get new gear every year, so when I get stuff, I buy quality so I don't have to replace it very often. My last pair of boots was close to $400... and most of the time when I look at boots and such I look at the price last.

The burtons I tried on with the boa didnt fit me at all... with normal laces they fit well but after a while hit me in pressure points and hurt a lot... I have heard some good things about thirtytwos, but when I broke a pair trying them on and then wore some for a while, I wasn't too impressed. The Celsius boots however felt awesome... so we'll see... Gonna wait till some places get the DC's and some other boots in, and i'll go give those a try.

As far as sales, don't despair crew! There's a sale at the U of C this coming Friday and they usually have a fair amount of hardware, but there's a LOT of softgood stuff... jackets, pants, shirts.

As far as gear goes for this year, I picked up a 2007-2008 Technine Jib at a sample sale in April, so far, the best board I've ridden for my style of riding. It's wicked for park. I bought it as well as 2007-2008 MFM bindings for... dun dun dun... $325 for the set... Sample sales rule...

I bought boots last year at the source sale... Forum Takedowns... they're pretty good, but I'm considering getting something a little softer for next year... but as far as this year goes, I'm very much looking forward to getting onto the hill!

Who is holding the sale at the U of C?... I don't really need any softgoods, but I wouldn't mind checking it out for hardware.

I can't say I have had any experience with the missions myself... but all my friends who have run burton bindings had shitty luck with them, and they fell apart all the time.

Your friend must be talking about the first year Burton came out with the toe caps because they were absolute trash. As far as today goes all Burton bindings are solid. The missions are great; I have them on my Lib right now. They are so quick and easy to get on and off, plus my feet and legs have stopped hurting ever since I switched from conventional straps. If you don't have the funds for anything Burton go with ride bindings, they are cheep, effective and toe cap convertable.

No one should forget to buy a good set of goggles, considering how often the hills are covered by overcast. I lost count on how many times I’ve seen people get destroyed by “invisible” moguls due to flat light conditions. I just bought a set of Oakley wisdoms with Fire Iridium lenses.

I spent the $35 on this film and only watched it once, it reminds me of snowboard videos from 1996.

Instead go out and buy "Picture This" by Mack Dawg or "Catch the Vapours" by Standard Films.

I also suggest "Draw the Line" from last year, these are vids you can play over and over and no one complains.

^^ I kinda agree... the sandbox film was nothing special... and lots of the music in it just annoyed me instead of helping me get stoked for boarding.

I have always been impressed by Mack Dawg vids though, like follow me around from last year, and from ___ with love the year before. Gotta pick up picture this myself one of these days soon.

I agree for sure... although for me, i've got to get contact lenses this year so i can see better on the mountains lol. Just picked up some new spy goggles myself, and I'm going to order a clear lens for my a-frames for nights at COP.

Picked up my new boots yesterday too... had them on for close to 30minutes this time, after I was in earlier in the week. They feel awesome, and will make my life much better on the slopes. Oh ya, they are Celsius CLS7's.

I couldn't stand the music either.

Just so you know, Picture This (PT) may not blow you away, their previous years films were better to a certain degree. PT has a few too many rails, it's about 23 minutes long (Excluding the 8 minute intro and outro), they even admit it was the best they could do on the inside front cover with the lack of snow in Europe. (Could have gone somewhere else)

But it does have over 20 heli shots, lots of night scenes with great ligthing, solid soundtrack and two amazing tricks by JP Walker.

As for the season this year, I know of two ppl who have gone backcountry already and say it's the best they ever remember. On biglines I read SW Alberta(from what I recall) had 82cms base. I'm one of the few who can't wait for snow, my rails are already out of the garage and in the yard waiting to be used....

I looked at some Celsius last year and was turned off by those easy lace up things, so instead I went with some MFM Nitro's.

Have you guys seen "It Anit Easy", its got the Who and trains how could you not like it.

As far as backcountry goes, I was told out in Revy they have about 4 feet already. Im going to start getting my sleds ready to go so I can be able to hit the road at a moments notice of snow.

I’ve been looking for a new snowboard now for a several weeks and had the fallowing things in mid while looking. The board would be strictly for park use only, no longer than 158”, 7/10 hardness and any company but Burton or Forum. I also set a very reasonable price range for my self, which was between 450 to 550 dollars.

I went to Source were I had my mate show me all the freestyle boards they had a couple weekends ago.

1) GNU – Street Series (Price, size and hardness were all good but not my style)
2) GNU – Danny Kass (Price and size were good but just to damn ugly)
3) Lib Tech - Phoenix Series
4) Lib Tech – Total Ripper Series
5) Lib Tech – Dark Series
6) Lib Tech – Banana Series (I didn’t by any of the Lib’s, because I already own one and wanted something different)
7) Rome – Agent (Price and size were good but was to soft for my liking)
8) Rome – Mod (Out of price range and hate blunt noise design)

Last Weekend I headed over to Chikko’s and had my crazy bud Al help me out.

1) Nitro –MFM (Out of my Price range and it had blunt noise)
2) Arbor – Drift (Great Price, Size, hardness and looks)

So to conclude tonight I am going to pick up my new Arbor Drift from Chikko's and a pair of Cartell's from the Source. A few reasons I liked the Arbor’s so much over the rest were because of its koa wood core which gives it such a nice flex and crazy pop over the other boards. Except the GNU Street Series which had the same flex and pop characteristics. I also like how there is such a limited number of arbor boards available to buy, meaning that you won’t see 50 kids out at the hill tearing on the same setup.

if you're still kind of looking, I suggest looking at a Capita Stairmaster, a variety of technines as well as a Sapient Coulter. They're all solid boards and I've ridden the coulter and just bought a technine. Price is very reasonable as well.

Also, Child Support is an AWESOME video... check it out, I recommend it.

The arbor boards are sick... I was going to pick up an arbor element... but couldn't quite afford it.

Al is an awesome guy too, great guy to deal with, Chikko is where I bought my new boots.

I have been to quite a few shops in the last couple weeks, and am trying to decide on some new bidings, as now I dont even have a choice after selling my technines lol.

I'm trying to find something mostly for freeriding, but some park use aswell. I want something alot more responsive than my old technine MFM's. here's what I have been looking at:

-Rome Targas -look pretty nice, I like the adjustability, the stiffness is awesome too.
-Rome 390's - not quite as adjustable as targas, but cheaper, which might be a good thing for me at this time
-Ride Betas UL - I like the aluminum baseplate they are pretty damn light weight and I have heard good things about ride
-Union Force DLX or MC - the MC is stiffer, most places dont have them in stock yet, but they are a bit pricey due to the CF. I have heard good things about unions, and they are nice and adjustable and pretty stiff.

And ya, much agreed. child support is an amazing video, definately one of the best this year as picture this is quite good too.

Oh, I loved Picture This. It wasn't quite as good as Child Support, but I really enjoyed it, despite its mixed reviews.

I picked up some Forum Platform 1.5 Bindings this Friday at the Sample sale as well for only $50... I threw them on my screw around board but am considering throwing them on my technine board to check them out as well... but I don't think they'll be anywhere close to competing with my MFM bindings...

Draw the line is great... I have "thanks in advance" but still have to watch it. Also an Analog freebie that apparently is pretty good.

I really have to get new goggles... like discussed overcast conditions pwn me. I'm going to get some goggles with persimmon lenses..

This year i got an RCR pass and plan on going to whistler and whitefish mountain resort too. Its going to be pretty epic, i hope to get out 25+ times ;)

+1 for Arbor. I'm on my second Arbor ('07 Roundhouse Wide) and it's an excellent snowboard in all conditions. Light & flexy for an all mountain board....plus I love the old school woodie look and how it's "green".

Also road an older Element...great board as well but it wasn't a wide.

I watched child support for the first time last night and thought it was intense. I f*cking loved the back country footage they got, especially the pillow lines and road gaps. I also thought the movie was a direct descendent of Afterbang, especially the blue child mascot was more or less the same thing in Afterbang with there cardboard robot. All in all it is one of the best videos I’ve seen so far next to “Picture this”.

On another note I hope every one is starting to pray for snow, because this global warming shit is killing opening days.

Any snowboard shop really... Mission, Chikko, the Source, Skaters, etc... They arent cheap though which sucks.

And ya I'm praying for snow... I want to get out already... but I should probably get to the gym to help get ready for this season... so out of shape lol.

^^^ As far as a n00b board, just head down to a couple of local shops and see what they have... if you need a whole setup board, boots, bindings... they can usually put together some good packages for a decent price.

Anybody want to post their setup w/ pics?

I'm using a Burton Indie 155, Drake Matrix bindings, and Northwave Decade boots (feel very similar to 32's Lashed boots in my opinion, like them alot)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d195/Moonshinerunner/Indiedrake.jpg

These are the boots, I don't have a pic of them from the digital cam, so just found one on the internet.

http://images1.buzzillions.com/images_products/01/34/25683_300.jpg

The board is LIGHT, probably the lightest 155 I've ever rode on. It is pretty stiff though. The bindings weight it down a bit more, but they are damn strong.

I'm 5'9, 165 lbs by the way.

For outerwear, using an Analog cash camo jacket (picked it up at the U of C snowboard sale, sweet deals there!), and Ripzone core pants.

Can anybody reccomend some good gloves or first layer shirts? The Analog Jacket is nice, it's just way too thin compared to my old Ripzone one and I'd rather not freeze :burnout:

Well ya, also I have a bad knee, so balance work and such seems to help a lot with that.

For gloves I picked up some drop gloves last year that I really like, and grenade makes some nice gloves too. And there are lots of good base layers out there... I need to go pick some up too though, I did buy one bonfire shirt the other week because it was pretty cheap.

used a pair of sl-6's for 3 years and loved em, replaced them with sl-9's after that, still no complaints. no durability issues here plus they are nice and comfy.

the driver-x is a really stiff boot, i like stiff boots but even that was too much for me.

So whats everyones fav snowboard magazine? I enjoy Future snowboarding b/c it actually has lots of decent articles. Unlike our friends at Transworld who have a 200 page mag, 170 of which are ads, 25 short blirps, and one 5 page article about a trip to Sweden which highlights their cuisine more then riding. Hows snowboard canada?

I love future snowboarding specially their first mags with the latest reviews of the stuffs.

By the way, anybody know if the Snow Show at the round up centre any good if there was a previous one? It's this coming weekend.

I have been wondering about the snow show too, was thinking of checking it out if I have time.

Also, I used to like transworld, so picked up an issue last week and I couldn't agree more... the articles sucked... I was stoked to see an article about Tara Dakitas and some other good looking and awesome female riders, especially seeing as they were riding in Golden BC... but the article had dick all to do with snowboarding... granted transworld has good pictures, but thats about it.

I guess I'll have to check out future snowboarding one of these days,

Hmm... I'm not super knowledgable on boots... but I found that boots with the BOA lacing are nice and convenient, but after wearing a few pairs around the shops they started to pinch in some spots real bad... I've heard that i'm not the only one though as thats the biggest problem with them.

I ended up with some Celsius boots as finding a boot that fits my super wide and flat feet was a real pain in the ass.

One of the newer things on the market too are thirtytwo's ultra light boot... but I have heard they become really soft really fast.

has there been any advancements with the air system, i have a pair of dc that has it when they first came out and it lasted about a week then it never held air again. and is it just the one type of boot that you tried with the boa system or is it common with all of them?

I've always worn 32 and never had an issue with them. They are hella light, but the ultra light is obviously the lightest. The Lash is light too!

DENZILDON
11-02-2007, 11:54 AM
That 32 ultra light is soooo light!!! But too pricey for me. So O ended up with a 07 Burton Moto last week. Lighter than my crappy Firefly boots. As what apexdrift said above the quick lace system of Burton is pretty good!!! Plus the heat molded liners are awesome. I tried a 32 boot and this and Burton took the win because there was no or very very minimal heel lift.

If you are still selling it can you send me a pm on how much you want them? Thanks!!!

^^ Yo Kobe... I think the wisdoms are alright... but I hate how the straps mount to the goggles... I wear a helmet though and found they dont work at all.

DENZILDON, I decided to keep the spy's for now after trying them again, they fit better than my a-frames.

Kobe
11-02-2007, 12:50 PM
ya i wear a helmet also, its saved my ass enough times... what kind of spys do you have?

DENZILDON
11-02-2007, 01:45 PM
He has this:

http://forums.beyond.ca/st/191954/wtb-snowboard-goggles/

I wanted it because the my new board is green plus I got green pants and jacket! :D

And yeah, the SPY ones normally have better fits with helmets than the a-frame because of the sides where the garter connectors are.

No worries Hash, but if you do change your mind. PM me!!!

Hash_man
11-02-2007, 02:09 PM
sounds good. i'll let you know.

-And ya kobe... with a helmet... i find only the oakleys with the helmet kit work well... otherwise the sides seem to pull off your face a bit

I have a question for you guys.. this will be my 3rd season wearing these boots i bought.. maybe like twice a season haha.. But whenever im on the hill.. my calf muscle and my foot starts to ache. Do you think mission fitted me in the wrong boots? should i try those gel insoles? Also.. while im boarding I can feel myself tippy toeing a bit.

Maybe you tie your boots too tight?

interlude
11-02-2007, 04:05 PM
no.. its perfect.. i tried going tight but i would start losing circulation to my feet haha. I wonder if I should try new insoles. Or maybe these boots just dont fit me properly.

It feels fine when I first put them on, but after a couple runs my foot and calves start to ache. Maybe the boot is too "deep" so my feet are tippy toeing?

Hash_man
11-02-2007, 06:53 PM
Sounds like your heels are lifting in your boots or something... and thats not cool. That is the reason i wear boots for a long time before I buy them.

DENZILDON
11-02-2007, 08:33 PM
Yeah, it might indeed be a heel lift issue. Only work around is get new boots or if you have old boots you can try using the liners from the old boots instead of the original one.

well since you only go twice a season maybe the muscles arnt strong enough, i have that problem the first few times out in the year since i dont use those muscles as much in day to day life as i do on the hill

i just picked up wisdoms at the end of last session and haven't had the chance of taking them out on the hill, but i do love the iridium lenses. the only thing i don't like about them is that its such a huge google and wearing it with a helmet looks goofy. i might stick with my a frames w/persimmon lenses :banghead:

Instead go out and buy "Picture This" by Mack Dawg or "Catch the Vapours" by Standard Films.

I also suggest "Draw the Line" from last year, these are vids you can play over and over and no one complains.

If sandbox reminded you of 1996 then you haven't seen a snowboard video from 1996. Keep in mind a ton of these riders are from the local area(Ie. Cochrane, Calgary, Banff, Canmore, Etc.) Mostly young guys and alot of URBAN rails. If people don't like rails then obviously you won't think it's good, if you think Dustin Craven's Part is from 1996 your out of your fucking mind. I'm sick of everyone underestimating jibbing, go hit a 32 stair handrail, do that front board pretzel down it and then tell me whats up.

Child Support was good, but I warn you its alot of rails.

Think Thank is personally my favourite, alot of innovative riding.

99% sure it is a problem with your binding setup. Mellow out your high backs forward lean. What you are describing sounds a lot like what happens if you hold one edge for too long while running too much forward lean. You have all those knobs on your bindings for a reason use them... Another thing to try is depending on your stance it might be causing this as well.

for the wisdoms, if you wear a helmet you need to buy a seperate strap. i have a pair of polarized a frames, and crowbars, the crowbars are by far the most comfortable goggle i have worn to date.

Wisdoms are good if you have a gigantic face, I guess. I've had both and I prefer the Crowbar. Helmet or no helmet, they are more comfortable.

Spys are...well, Spys.

Not a snowboarding video, but has anyone watched Matchstick Productions video Push?

I'm a boarder myself, but this is one of the best videos I've ever seen (ski or snowboard movies). I'm starting to get bored of most boarding movies because its all rails, pipe and park stuff. Push is great because its mostly freeski stuff in the backcountry

Its an hour long and has a terrific soundtrack

I probably went through the movie at least 4-5 times over the summer to pump me up for the upcoming season

everyone's foot is different and we all have different preferences on how a boot should fit, just go to a shop and try them on.

Most spy dealers should be able to order them in... So, Mission, the Source... most of those shops should either have some in stock, or be able to order the lens in for you.
