Hey guys,

Just looking for some advice.

I took this job in August as a "Jr. Geophysicist" out in Matagami QC. The job description was Quality Control Geophysicist, with hotel provided for stay. The company was to pay for all travel expenses.

So when I get to the site, I find out that there are no Geophysicists on site, so I will be diong the work of a Slasher, very dis-heartning. Ontop of that, I find that I am not given a hotel, but made to share a house with 6 people. The house was absolutely disgusting, there was smoking inside the house, and people doing pot left right and centre. I talked to the field supervisor, and he said theres nothing he can do about it, and the fact that I am not diong my job as described is no big deal.

So after its said and done, I could not stay in this shit hole house, it was disgusting, the bed had stains all over it, and smelled like stale cigarettes. So I decided to high tail it out of there, cought a cab from matagami to Timmins Airport at my own expense, and fly back to calgary.

Now my question is, are they still liable to pay me for my time spent there, also do they pay for the costs incured on the travels back??

I just got my pay check which netted $0, as they made deductions of the same amount of my earnings.

Thanks,

How many days or hours did you work on the job for?

Sounds like they paid you... unfortunately all you made from your stay paid for their expenses.

How long did you stay out there?

2 days, I could not stay in those disgusting conditions.

But stay was a provided part of the deal?

Was there anything written in the deal for what happens if you leave early? Was there a set amount of time you were supposed to be there?

Sometimes companies will do that, that if you leave before a set amount of time, the things that they were going to pay for, now you are responsible for.

absolutely no conditions on the amount of time.

but they did breach contract when it comes to job description and title?

Job description is a tricky one. There is nothing that really says a Geophysisist can't do the duties of a Slasher. The would have been overpaying you (I assume), but that's their problem.

What's a Slasher?

What were the specific deductions on your paycheck?

punj_abi

$3 for EI, and then the rest of the $166.43 as a "total deduction".

And ontop of that I was with them for todays so it should have been $320.

Maybe I'll just call them and stir some hell.

no let them be....you are lucky to get out of there. I wouldn't waste my energy and time with them, instead, focus on finding a job here.

:werd: It's not worth the stress, unless you're willing to follow it through all the way into court. Even then, you'll probably lose more money than you'll gain just through time and extra costs.

Dont call and stir hell, but just call and have them discribe your pay check to you and what each deduction is for, that way you wont be in the dark, or maybe you will bring a mistake to their attention.

Alberta Labor Relations Board would probably be a good start.

Did you pay for your ticket and travel out there? How much are you out?

I would say its not worth the hassles and time it would take to get the $320 minus deductions. You could give them a call to see if there was a mistake or what is going on but it sounds like they may just give you the run around any way. Your energy maybe better spend finding another job

$3000 to get back? What did you take a private jet.. yikes.

The company would probably just tell you it was your choice to leave and didn't even let them know so your travel back is at your own expense. I could see it being a tough fight that you may not want in your life

Well the place Matagi is tiny. No airport no car rental no bus. So i had to take a taxi to timmins from there. thats why the incurred cost.

I will definatly give them a call, and talk to student legal about it.

"Total deduction"? The hell? That's all sorts of wrong

And no, not a geophysicist

In Alberta, companies cannot deduct from your paycheck (other than EI, Taxes etc) without your permission.

http://employment.alberta.ca/cps/rde/xchg/hre/hs.xsl/997.html

Is this an AB or QC based company? If they are QC based then the QC rules would apply.

Unless you have documentation saying the travel to and fro QC are paid, you are most like SOL for the $3000 as you left "voluntarily."

Damn dude. Where is the company based? Send in your record of hours and your "pay stub" to the labour board in that province or where ever and get it done. If you really want to ruin them, find out who their insurance company is and rat out the weed hahaha.

So what your suggesting is that he spends 3000 to go back to this place, throw a molitov cocktail in the forest, and then spend another 3000 to come back. I see.
