View Full Version : I'm searching for a career.

I'm twenty and I'm thinking of prospective careers. I don't know much about the working world, so I'm throwing out there what it is I want to do.

What I want to do;

I want to make $30 in an industrial area. My position is called a 'ticker' or something similar. What I will be doing is standing around with a clipboard ticking off containers, cars or piles of wood. I want there to be a lot of time to socialize and I don't want to have much responsiblity. I want flexible work hours and a union. I don't want to have to answer to a manager and I want to be able to spend a lot of time doing other things than ticking.

Please provide me with some input about what it's like to be a ticker and any experiences you've had as one.

What you are looking for is consulting in project management.

I guess if you want to be incredibly lazy and useless, a union makes a lot of sense.

That isn't a career, that is a slack job.

I'm sure somebody has to tick off everything that comes in. I don't want to have to focus, I want to look at something and add a tick mark to it's number. It's sounds like a respectable job and one which is secure.

I'd want to put my board onto a desk and have someone else double check the ticking, like an assistant.

Get a warehouse job.

The closest thing you are talking about is being a Shipping Receiver. However they do more than just "tick things off a list".

Seriously though. You are a moron.

My upstart ticking/consulting firm is looking to hire reasonably experienced tickers, must be able to tick cleanly and with a 90 degree inflection in their ticks +/- 3 degrees, absolutely no box shaders and x-ers. You sound like you know the business quite well, call my office at 436-TICK, I can make you a very powerful man in this industry.

Aliquot, if you wish to seek a job in the Ticking field, I suggest studying and applying for your GTFO (Graduated Ticking Field Operator) Licence. It is a 2 year program offered by most Vocational Colleges.

Re: Employment Opportunity

Dear Sir,

I am highly delighted to be offered such an opportunity.

I am sure by now that you have heard about my ticking abilities. I handle every stroke with precision and accuracy, ensuring that they do not stray over the demarcation box.

That is how I roll - in layman's terms.

However, I am fiercely loyal to my company. Case in point: I once bit off the head of a feral rooster to expose company espionage.

Before we converse more, please meet me at the elevators so that we may discuss remuneration and perk-ticulars. So as not to arouse suspicion - face only the south east wall, and speak with an ambivalent tone.

I will be awaiting your response.

Cordially...

D. Schrute

Wrong.

Beheading a feral rooster will NOT expose company espionage. Black bears kill roosters. Black bear wins.

False! Only the strong can withstand the scent of a feral rooster's blood. Spies are strong therefore I fired those...wait. How do I know this is not Jim?

So let me get this straight, you work a job with all these "benefits"; and you call HIM a lazy ass? Not that i'm suggesting he (or anyone else for that matter) aspire to be a "Ticker"; but why would you even BRING that up if you're not going to name it?
I just don't see the reasoning behind it.

Hey, at least you're an educated dumbass.

Hey, at least you're an educated dumbass. Getting a degree in itself is a way of paying your dues to attain such "benefits." You don't get paid $60k/year without putting work into it, whether through school or whether through grueling hours and labour at the job.

I find that people without university education don't always think this way though, and more often simply relate pay to hours worked or job difficulty.

I will not have some random philistine belittle my trade and livelihood over the Internet. Ticking is a fine career choice, and while it is not the most "high-brow" profession, it does feed and clothe my family. I for one am proud to have earned my designation, and to carry on the tradition of Ticking which lives on in my family. As a 3rd generation Ticker, I associate a certain level of pride with my work and expect the same of all my employees.

While we are not the most educated of people, I can assure you good sir, that we are not the dullest spoons in the cupboard nor are we "lazy ass fuckers".

Aliquot, if you really wish to become a Ticker, do not let societal labels such as "Blue-Collar" or "Labour or Production Focused" sway your decision. Tickers are a tight knit and proud community, and would be happy to see what you have to offer.
