Finally retailers start to take the initiative to match US$. Personally, I dont remember the last time I spent more than $20 on non-essential goods in Canada. I just make a list of stuff I want and wait for my quarterly trip to the US. I think Barnes & Noble also matches US$
Wal-Mart announces price cuts to match US retail:

Some of us do... I spend a lot of money on books and magazines every month.

It's a start though!

Loooooooooong overdue. Will take at least a few more months for other things to reach parity, if at all though.

:werd: Granted cards and gift wrap is cheaper at the dollar stores, it makes a big difference on literature. Some of the hard covers and special editions can have a $20 gap, and as for the magazines, if you buy just 3 mags with a $2 diff....thats like getting a fourth for free. It all adds up. The most important point is that there is a start. If companies like Canadian Tire in Ontario are cutting down...the rest of Canada will ''eventually'' follow...and hopefully the rest of the retail economy.

Awesome.... some people may bitch that its not enough,.... but it really is a big step. And starting with big retailers like that is fantastic, I hope it starts to move towards other products aswell soon... I hope Canon would do that with their lenses :P

Although Walmart will match US pricing, bookstores will likely not ever match, but they will offer discounts:

Meanwhile, Indigo Books and Music Inc. announced yesterday that its new 'Sticker Savings Event' would give consumers a discount of 10% off any book in its stores (iRewards loyalty program members will get a discount of 20%)...Booksellers predict prices will keep dropping and that releases slated for December and January could have a mark-up of 10% over the U.S. list price.

In addition to the lower priced books, mags, cards etc, Walmart:

Continued price negotiations - which it began in August 2006 - with
product suppliers.
- Announced reduced prices on all new-release video games and many
existing titles.
- Reduced prices on hundreds of music titles.
- Reduced prices on hundreds of household staples.
- Initiated deep and early Rollbacks on many of this year's highest-
profile toys.
- Announced plans for a 40-per cent increase in weekly Rollbacks
leading into the holidays.

If video games are being discounted, I can only imagine that hardware pricing will go down a notch around Christmas shopping season.

:werd: I think people should start posting any dollar related discounts around town.

I got a 20% discount because I'm an iRewards member. If I bought it online, I think it's a 30% discount, but I need instant gratification hahaha.

Indigo released to the media that they are giving a 10- 20% discount on books, at the moment they are treating it more as a sale than actually trying to level the prices due to the exchange rate.....

Walmart is discounting their books, cards, and magazines.... In my opinion it must only be this at the moment because not many other products have the us and canadian price printed right on the object.... It's great that there has been word about them trying to get other products levelled.
