I am debating on buying a cool little project car for dirt cheap. Problem is it was aquired when the seller purchased an apartment building. He doesn't have the title to the car.

Is there any way to go about getting a title to the vehicle if it has been abandoned?

Is this an American car?

No. It is a Porsche actually. I believe it is a 73'.

I think he means whether the car your looking to purchase is in the US

Write down the VIN and go get it checked at the registry.

There is no title. Head down to the registry with the VIN number and tell them you are considering the purchase. Ask them to run the VIN to make sure that it can be registered in Alberta and see whether there is any questionable history (stolen, salvage, etc).

Does the seller own the vehicle? ie, if somebody abandoned it in his parking lot, he doesn't automatically own it...

He might be able to sell it under a warehousemen's or posessory lien, but you'd want to verify this before you buy it. Otherwise, the previous owner might still have a valid claim against it, even if the registry shows no problems right now.

Apparently it sold tonight. Which is probably good. Saves me some hassle, would have been a fun project though.
