looking for a decent winter beater and I may have stumbled upon a 198X subaru wagon.

and info on them? i know it is AWD, but how about reliability, fuel economy, handling, etc?

Pretty damn reliable I guy I know had one, they even came turbo! Cool little car

They aren't bad little machines. Like most other cars, they tend to need more TLC as they age, but there isn't anything that is really prone to causing trouble with them, as long as its in reasonably good shape to start with.

i have heard subarus didn't become reliable till the 90s, but I don't know.

How about one of those 4 whl drive toyotas? I see tona of those on the road, they probably go forever.

One thing I just thought of, beware of the older models that came with the air ride suspensions. They are really prone to failure, and expensive to repair. Best bet is to "upgrade" to a regular suspension and do away with the air ride completely.

My uncle had one of the older subies... Damn bulletproof engine :eek: but damn the body was rusted to shit... Its hard to find a suby from that era that is in good condition body wise.
