manual hood release spring?

hi guys,

does anyone know if there is supposed to be some sort of spring for the manual release for the hood of a mkII? i'm talking about the release that's under the hood to get the hood open once the latch inside the car has already been pulled. (see pic)

should there be a spring between where the red arrows are?

I had a problem getting the hood open today, I think the cable is ok because i can feel tension. I'm guessing the manual release was holding it in place, but not totally sure.

LOL I have to bonk my engine lid to get it to open... Pull the lever, bonk the lid, and it pops up. :nut:

yeah, that's exactly what I had to do to get the hood to pop.

anyways, thanks for the reply guys, I guess I'm off to find a spring of some sort to hold that lever back...
