I wanna buy myself a nice poker chip set but I'm having a tough time deciding which to get. I have found 5 different sets so far, which would you choose?

Or if you have a better suggestion let me know?

1st set.

I like the last ones...a little classier lol. You might want to keep in mind that if you go over 5 players you'll need at least 2 sets. We have 1500 chips for 10-15 guys

That was my first pick, but I'm kind of leaning toward set #3 right now.

I thought the Mahogany case might be a pain in the ass for transporting.

I think a 500 chip set will do for now. I have trouble getting five guys to play let alone 8.

I play with the third set at a friends home game a lot and they are pretty decent. If you're looking into a good chip set then also invest into a good solid plastic card deck as well. They're pretty cheap and well worth the money.

Screw it...LOL.

I ordered set #3 along with a poker table top and some copag playing cards.

Good choice on #3 if you plan on transporting it. Sets apart from the silver aluminum cases.

The Mahogany case would be my choice if you didn't have to move it around, good piece to leave in the living room.

I was gonna offer some advice but you've already ordered. Those are nice looking chips, the 3rd set.

You'll find though that after the first game, the looks wont matter as much as the "feel". Always best to try and get a handful before you buy to see how they stack, shuffle and feel.

I bought this one real nice looking set. But when I got them they were terrible to play with. So slippery, you couldn't pick up a stack of 20 without them flipping out all over the table. And on the table, the slightest bump would send everyone's stacks all over the place.

so unless you're going to get real Paulson's or Ceramics (at about .80 each!) the its best to get samples first.

You'll love the Copags!! I keep around 10 decks on hand at all times.

Here's my chips, they're cheap, but have a great feel to them:

Oh and btw, here is a local guy who has excellent products and can do custom printed ceramics. They're beautiful chips!!

StraightFlush (http://www.straightflush.ca/)

He also has great prices on Copags and other poker related stuff

I have those EXACT same chips and the same case.

They are cheap but feel way better than the resin/metal chips from Costco. The hold together well and you can stack them HIGH without fear of them flying all over the place.

Yeah they're nice aren't they? The best feeling "cheap" chips out there. You can get those now for probably about .20 each. Those 1000 or so cost me about $350 at the time.

Yeh, thats the problem, there isn't a place in town that seems to sell high quality chips that I can touch/feel.

If I don't like these I will sell them and order a different set from somewhere else.

Hopefully they feel as nice as they brag them up to be. Probably the biggest selling point for me was the weight.

I actually find the 9-10g chips to feel the best.

The heavier chips I find too clunky.

Really? I find the heavier the chip, the better they stack and potentially shuffle. (Depends on the edge)

95% of all Vegas Casino chips are between 8 and 10 grams. just an fyi.

I played with some 15 grams chips and they feel kinda cool. But I still prefer a 9 gram chip.

I have never played poker in a Las Vegas casino, so I wouldn't know.

But I do know that a heavy chip feels, stacks and shuffles really really nice.

I would have went with something on straight flush because they allow you to choose the quantity of each denomination. I'm not sure what kind of set up you go with when you have home games, but with us, we usually go with either 5-10 or or 10-25 or 25-50 starting blinds (depending on whose house/chip set we are using) so we never actually use the 1s. Also, it's all personal opinion but I think Kem cards are way better than Copags. I don't know about you guys but I HATE the large numbers that copags use. I prefer the small index that casino kem cards use.

Yeh that bugged me as well. When we play, we usually count each chip as a $100/regardless.

Our blinds go as such.

200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1000 and so on.

Yeah cards are a personal preferance. Both are really nice decks. But Copag makes the regular index as well as the jumbo index. I also like the warranty Copag gives. Any bent card and they'll replace the deck free.

But once you've played on a nice table and with nice Decks like Kems or Copags you'll never go back to paper cards lol.

So my chipset came in today.

We had a game at lunch time and I'm not so sure if I like them or not.

They feel nice and are very heavy but they aren't very easy to shuffle like I was hoping. It might be because they are new or because of the high clay content, they almost feel soft. They stack amazing, just hard to shuffle.

The Copags are amazing to shuffle, but I hate the dark design and large artsy look. It kind of makes it harder to see the suites.

The black aluminum case the chips came with is just junk.

The poker table top is nice, but I don't like the drink cup holder/chip holder.

If someone is interested in buying the whole set of me the including poker table I would be willing to sell you everything for $200.00

A savings of $55

Depends if I can sell these or not.

I don't mind the chips, but I'm definitely going to oder the folding table top without the chip holders.

They have ones with just the padded edge. They are twice the cost of my table top but I think I would prefer it.

The table tops are nice and large, 7'x3' and basically cover a whole boardroom table with about a 5" ledge all the way around, plenty of room for sure. I just prefer to stack my chips.

Most of those table toppers are pure junk. The chip trays are garbage, the cupholders are useless and if it hangs over the table even a couple of inches, the minute someone leans on it with both elbows (and trust me, they always do) then the whole topper comes flying up with chips and cards everywhere.

I have one of my tables that I'm selling, but if you're at all handy with woodworking tools its not hard to make your own. Check out the tables in my sig. The burgundy with black cupholders is for sale for $400. Cost of materials for your own will run you around $300

That is a really nice table, but I wanted something portable that I could take on a trip, bring to a persons house or to work.

These portable tables are actually quite nice, very solid, with a real nice felt. I just prefer stacking instead of the trays. It was an impulse buy. But the price I'm asking for everything is very very fair.

11-12-2007, 07:42 PM
Oh yeah that is a smokin deal for what you're offerin.

You're right though, my tables are more for a room, not portable even though they have folding legs.
Ya know what is actually better than a table topper? Just buy a piece of real casino "hold'em" cloth, and a piece of Headliner foam. Use the 3M spray glue and glue 'em together. You can use it on ANY table just like a table cloth. Rolls up and is light, easy to carry around. I've actually got 3 different colours in stock. I used this in my own place just over my dining room table just for a quick game one time and it was awesome! Cards fly across it beautifully and its scotchguarded so avoids stains from drinks. Chips stack on it with no problems. That way it will fit over any shape of table and the bit of headliner foam as padding make picking up cards and shuffling chips easy.
