dont know where to put this so its going here.not many good pics right now, but the story is... had a couple of tuner cars(Lancer, MR2) but my father in law had this 88 Monte SS that hes been fixing up. bugged him for 5 years for him to sell it to me and he finally did for 7k. hes done some extensive underbody work on it prior to me buying it because of a shitload of Ontario rust. the plan is to roll out in April 08. so far i havent installed anything but ive gotten a bunch of shit ready for it. full AAC air system with 4x200 PSI RE-7 bags, 8 gallon tank and 2 Viair 480 compressors. a guy in the states is powder coating me some reversed 14x7's chrome wire wheels with burgandy nipples and KnockOff's. building a custom system for it right now as well. most are phone pics so not that great but ill put up more soon with my digital. LMK what you think so far.

forgot to say, i shaved the antenna and ran it through the fender and it still sounds perfect. cut out and rewelded the rust out of the wheel wells and along the front bumper. taking off all of the pinstriping to make it as updated and clean as possible.

I like it. You can't do restorations properly on newer cars.

03ozwhip
11-13-2007, 04:34 PM
restoration it is. but its nearly finsihed as far as fixing all the rust and body damage. it needs a little more filler where the pinstripes took off the paint and other than that, its almost ready to paint. i need some opinions on the interior. its all stock burgandy right now, so im looking into doing a cream/burgandy interior, but dont know what material to use. any opinions will be appreciated.

Jake Hoyt: This car is not from the motor pool.
Alonzo Harris: It's not, sexy though, ain't it?
Jake Hoyt: So, where's the office? Back at division?

that is very true. but classics nonetheless. trust me, you dont want to miss this build. there will be very little old skool flavor to this ride. but i had to do it with the wheels. this will be a very up to date 80's "muscle car"

I'm extremely jealous. I have always loved the SS Monte's. My dream would be an '86-'88 black Monte, with a swapped LSx motor, Ford 9" with LSD, full Hotchkiss suspension package, and some big ol' rubber in the back.

I hope you don't mind that I hate you now. :D

As for interior, check out Katzkin's website for some ideas. I think Cream leather with burgandy piping, carpet and liner would look pretty slick. Liner could be suade-ish, since you're going lowrider anyways. Carpet in a durable auto carpet, don't need to go nuts with that.

You could also do an insert on the seats but the piping would keep the contrast if you did the rest of the interior in burgandy. Keep it to two colours unless your third is a splash of black.

Then you need to do the accents in the cream as well, like the steering wheel and gear shift, glove box, etc.

Keep up the good work, love those rims!

i thought about going that route, but this is just so much differnet for an SS that i have to do it.

those are almost exactly my thoughts. and even with the black its like you read my mind. witch... anyways the little bit of black thats in there is staying, theres not alot of it. but im keeping the piping burgandy, the dash and the carpet, the rest is getting 2 toned. inserts in the fronts and backs, im just not sure if i want burgandy inserts or cream inserts. thanks for the input guys.

its not gonna bounce. if i wanted to do that i would have gotten hydros. i got air for a good purpose. a nice drop, clearing speed bumps and steep driveways, and the overall better ride and handling. in the front i have to relocate the shocks, there is no way i will drive it without shocks, so the ride on this thing is gonna be like floating on a cloud. not like lowering srings that can be bouncy or hard. dont get me wrong, they can have a good ride to them, but with the drop that i want when its parked, lowering springs wont do anything near what bags will do for me. as for doing things right, there really is no other way to do it when i have all the time i need to work on it.

I know what you're talking about with air-ride. I've seen many comparo's done with air-ride vs. different suspension companies, and air-ride does well, if not considered the best. And there really is nothing like seeing a car or truck parked, "resting on the rails", then air up and drive away. Good luck with the build, and congrats on not letting us "naysayers" tell you what you should or shouldn't do on your ride. Definitely making it your own, and that's the way it should be.

Also a tip for primering (if you already dont know this) Prep past where the repair is and then mask away from it so you dont create a hard line it is 100x easier to sand out that way.

whew! you have no idea how happy i am to hear you are not planning on bouncing it, or twisting everything to put one wheel in the air. soo many classic cars like this end up at the wreckers this way.

While the rims would not be my choice, these cars always look great in my books.

03ozwhip
01-02-2008, 04:42 PM

I gotta give ya props on going the way you did. While I wouldn't have done it that way, it's really coming along nicely. I'm liking the look more and more as I watch this thread. One question though, are you gonna paint the exterior the OEM color, or are you gonna go for something different? I ask, because the painted section of the rims looks almost the same color as the OEM.

03ozwhip
01-28-2008, 08:02 PM
the color is VERY close. the only thing i might do is throw on some kind of clear to make it look alot like black in some lights. thanks for the props, its not for everyone but i love it.

no new pics yet, but all of wiring is run, compressors are bolted down, carpet is fiinished so i just need to plug everything in and bolt down the tank. so as far as the air is concerned its pretty much done. the car itself is far from done, since it needs paint and a stereo. the frame when its laid out is 1 1/4 inch and the rear is 1 3/4 inches off the ground, fairly level laid out. new pics soon.

yeah man, good ol NE was his base of operation haha. He's built many rides for friends and family alike. The last one that I can remember was a candy red 64 impala

Actually very similar to this, with an all white leather interior.

Your setup is looking good so far, if i had the time and money I'd be all over this, and your right about it being an over looked scene. In a way, it makes it that much more unique because its not the typical little civic with a fart box attached haha.

That's pretty rad man! Only thing I'd change is matching the wheel color exactly to the body.

Great to see some different stuff on Beyond for a change....

as far as getting it painted, my step dad is supposed to do it, but he split up with my mom and i havent talked to him in months, so that might be out the window. so im not sure where/when im getting it painted. the wheels are very very close in color when the car is clean and the wheels are clean, you can barely tell if the color is off. thanks for the props guys, like i said, tis a work in progress and theres ALOT more stuff i wanna do, i just need the dough. and for my wife to let me spend it haha.

you finally got it home... was there any problems driving at highway speed? you get the deck and sub in yet?

just one small scrape over a bump in the rear. i put new shocks in the rear last night, and im getting the front shocks relocated this saturday so the ride will be alot better. there was a gas leak but i think i stopped it *crosses fingers* ive only driven it once to work since i got it home, but ill be taking it to work tomorrow...deck is in, but no constant power because of the way the wiring was when i got it, ill fix that soon though. sub box is complete, just need to cut the hole and mount the sub in it, but its not in the car yet. your bumper is almost done!!!
