What's good just in general, might use it a bit for school, and is there a way I can keep my winamp files when I change operating systems?

I've been using Windows XP Pro for about a year now and I half to say it's the best that I have used over the last several Window versions. It's VERY stable, 99% of the drivers work well and the best part is it seems to manage the memory very well. As I type this I have winamp running, three explorers, Outlook, two different word files, CorelDraw11 and Photoshop... I'm also not running a very fast system either, I'm running PIII 900MHz 512MB ram and a have descent video card.

I'm running a 3 y/o computer p3 I think it's only 453MHz or something, I can't even remember anymore.

WHat else should I upgrade, or should I just get pretty much everything new?

I keep my computer at whatever industry standard is at. Its currently Win2000, so thats what I use. I like it. I'm on a huge Uptime streak right now.

 I run it on a PII Celeron 333 with 256MB RAM :P
Granted, it does run quite well, regardless. Just turn off all the slowass make-the-UI-pretty shit, and all the useless services (cuts RAM use down about 20-30MB)

if its ure using a 450mhz comp...dont get xp or 2000...get me. 450 is too damn slow for xp or w2k.

if ure getting a new comp, wait awhile for new o/s to come out....

running xp on both my computers (2ghz and 400mhz) and I have experienced no problems on either...especially good since there is no blue screen errors anymore (your pc might lockup once in a while...but at least you don't have to look at a blue screen msg :D)
