I personaly think the height and wieght of the rider matters more than the power of the bike, like the size of the bike matches the size of the person. I started on a GSX-R750, everybody said that I was going to die. I had it 2 years and I never layed it down once. 3 of my other friends crashed there 600's the same year I got mine.

As long as you respect the bike and don't exceed your own capabilities you will be fine regardless of the power of the bike.

The bigger issue, as which is the case for me is - do I really want to put down 15k on a bike and gear for something I can only ride six months out of the year - and ultimatly may not continue to like after a year or two.

How 'bout a Harley?? Max can be YOUR biker...umm.. chick/dewd??   Seriously though, the Ninja 250 is an excellent bike to start out on, it's what I first rode. It's not a sub 13sec. bike, but it's got the look of one. Also the Suzuki SV650 is a decent starter bike, although it doesn't have a full fairing like it's 'big brothers, I mean big sisters' The biggest thing is actually sitting on a bike at a dealer and feeling comfortable or not with the rider position/controls. Once you figure that out, there is actually an infinite number of possibilities for you i.e. new/used, v-twin/inline, eng. displacement etc etc... Good Luck  :burnout:

Legendboy is 100% on the height and weight of the rider.

Also, how strong are you?? That make a big difference. You don't want to tip-toeing you bike at the redlights. Even worse would be if its too heavy, guarantee you'll drop it if you can hold it up easily

My first bike was an old '85 Honda Rebel. That was a good beginner bike. I'm not that tall, only 5'6".
Once I can afford one, I want to get a Ninja 500 next year. Man, I miss having a bike.

Isnt the R6 the smallest frame for a 600 cc ?
That bike is pimp, its too bad that they are as common as hondas nowadays.
But i want one anyways, probably next spring

You won't be buying a bike unless I am the one buying it for you! So you know who you have to be nice to!

Ninja EX 250 for you. For a bigger person, EX 500.

The GS500E from Suzuki is not only cheap, it offers a variety of features that others bikes for the same price don't. You can get a new 2003 for about $5,500. I am pleased with mine. Decent learning curve with enough power to keep you happy for a long time. Cheap on insurance/parts. Good on gas. Easy to work on.
REDLINE 11,500
DOHC INLINE TWO/ AIR COOLED

Here is a pic of my 1989 version:

P.S (If you don't like the naked sport look, it is possible to get a body kit for cheap)
