They were talking about it on the radio. A lot of people phoned in bitching and moaning about how it was just like the CPS to waste money getting stuff they don't need (really, which cop needs a hummer?).

Then someone calls in and tells them that it was actually donated to the police force.

It was Donated by Jack Carters. and the New H2 is pretty much just an Overly priced Suburban. its not worth the near $100,000 IMO. The Po-po also have a new toyota matrix with the cherries atop the roof aswell

I guess the cops get hummers more often than I do!

It's basically a new battering ram. Cops in the states also have Hummers. I'm sure they have a way to justify something like that.

I know they have a Beetle but it's for drug prevention and is driven by drug counsellors, got the lights and all. Maybe it's actually a beetle RSi in disguise? haha probably not... or is it?

The H2 was donated by a car dealership, and the people of calgary raised the money to buy the helicopter.

In case anyone doesn't know, the Hummer is to promote recruitment for the CPS. They're some 200+ officers short at the moment, and need to recruit very quickly due to a lot of older officers retiring early.

The problem is that currently CPS isn't well liked... It's difficult to branch out as well to another organization.

I do find it funny that everyday the city is pushing the notion that SUV's are evil polluting machines, that are a detriment to our enviroment, every year the Mayors enviro expo pulls out the soapboax and goes on and on about the perils of owning one, yet everytime I turn a corner, I see a new type of SUV being used by one of the cities various departments..Seems the standards are different when it comes to the city, if its not the EMS supervisors driving GMC denali's, police driving hummers, durango's, explorers, Parks and Recreation in Xterra's, its the Enmax people driving around in a Land Rover...
I don't care if its donated or not, it costs money to outfit one of those vehicles, I use to know a guy that did that stuff for the city, and the average cost per vehicle was around 15-20g for the paint, lights, computer, Etc etc..
I like how they get a swanky toy, and they deem it a promotion tool, give me freakin break, its toy for the department that has it, all it promotes, is welcome to the CPS, all we do is drive around and look cool in our custom toys....
EMS now has a Austin Mini, how that vehicle compliments fire trucks and ambulances is beyond me, oh yeah, its "promotional"...whatever....Maxt

ya dealers often donate ars to cities. we got a 2004 ford expedition and a beetle turbo desil and a 2004 doge Ram 1500. IT's quite nice. but a hummer? DAMN! and they do cost a lot for the decals and lights and the onboard compter with wireless modems and crap.

And Tele-tubby sized cops are having problems getting into those 'compact' Impalas....

I am sure EMS did not have to pay a cent for that mini cooper. Its promotional because they get the mini for free and help promote the car, and EMS gets to promote themselves and any programs they have with that car as it travels from school to school.

That would be interesting! getting pulled over by a WRX :)

That is correct Kenny, the Dealership donates the car and they get to maintain a badge on the car from where it was from.

What exactly are they promoting Kenny, the car, or they have money to burn on the outfitting of vehicle that serves no apparent purpose...
If people don't know that EMS exists, they have problems beyond that of austin mini doing anything to enlighten them,
a 1 ton ambulance barrelling down the street with the lights and sirens going is far more visible than a mini...
I have a hard time listening to the union heads of such organizations, and the management teams both whining in the media, about the lack of funds for wages etc, when everyday there such blatant wastes of money and resources on gimmicks that serve no purpose, except provide those with a foot on certain rung, a perk under the guise of supposedly serving the public good..
Where is the need to promote an essential service, if you ask me, if it just served its intended purpose , that would be a far better form of promotion..Yah really think seeing some city personell in an Austin mini, is gonna make some be a paramedic...mmkay....whatever...
Did you see the cops display at WoW? what did they do , what did they accomplish... 4 fat arses got paid time and half to drink coffee in front of dodge ram..oh yeah thats promotional to people who didn't have any inkling that Calgary had police.
The mounties in Okotoks were in printed media and Telvision, saying that they no longer had the resources to properly patrol their area, they were short staffed by at least 3 officers and that public safety is suffering.....Yet they had enough resources to get a Volkswagen beetle outfitted as an RCMP car and put 2 officers in it to drive around Okotoks for a couple of weeks, cruising their new ride like a couple of chesters..Lack of resources indeed..
Public service has become an industry unfortunatley, its no longer a service, which is to bad really...Max

So you would prefer cops to not interact with the community and drive around in a superior fascist manner in 1980's caprices? Holy christ, give it a rest.

Maxt
07-20-2003, 09:24 PM
How does driving around interact with the community...?
Fascists drive 1980 caprices? Lay off the bong...
They have a role to serve, and thats what they are there for, sometimes the job can be thankless, however they are amply compensated financially, and they chose that line of work, no one forced them to do it...However they are also responsible to the public for the proper use of public resources, and attaining toys is not proper use of public resources...Max

Police displays at WoW etc is more to promote public interaction than anything else... If the police and public can develop more of a mutual respect then everything will be easier in the long run. People will respect the law more and (possibly) break the law less, police may be more sympathetic to small infractions and when a "bad apple" does something really wrong (either a citizen or an officer) both the public and the police are more likely to punish that individual rather than "protecting their own" (due to the feeling of a more unified relationship between police and citizens).

Granted this is all theory, but when I lived in White Rock (BC) the police had a fairly decent repore with the teens and I was forgiven on several traffic stops... It works both ways - you give respect, you get respect.

A guy i work with has 3 jobs right now, the one we work together in, Landscaping, and another, he works for the Police.
He got to drive it about a month and a bit ago, just after they got it decalled and the sirens put on...It was about 2 days after the PD got it...
He said it was fun, realllllly fucking fun, to see the look on some peoples faces as a hummer sped by w/ sirens on past their porches.. :D

As far as I know, the cops have a "tuned" undercover civic. They are trying to get into the street races to bust people I think.
